Four Cities, by Hala Alyan

Poetry. Middle Eastern Studies. Wandering from Detroit to Haifa, Tripoli to Brooklyn, the poems of FOUR CITIES reveal the underbelly of cities, bearing witness to narratives of love, occupation and faith. These testimonies are harvested from displaced landscapes, histories and languages, revealing the unsettled lives of immigrants. Using urgent, haunting language, Alyan evokes the unlikely backdrop of Palestinian bazaars and Midwestern junkyards, policed checkpoints and boisterous nightclubs. A Lebanese village burns while lovers kiss in Paris. A traveler unpacks her grief in the homes of strangers. This lyrical collection captures the interplay between adopted and imposed homes, the poignant legacy of exile.

‘In the end it is the timid that stays….’
By Grady Harp
New York poet Hala Alyan is a Palestinian-American who in addition to capturing a solid following for her poetry is also a clinical psychologist. This is second published collection of her works) the first being the much admired ATRIUM) and she grow with every new poem.
The cities of the title are Detroit, Haifa, Tripoli and Brooklyn and the concept of the multiple locations is her desire to encourage us to examine the lives of immigrants – that emotional tie between city of origin and city of transplant and all the changes in perceptions such alterations create. Some examples follow:

SUMMER

-violet hems the terrace,
a piazza of song, count
wasps in the summer jasper misting
into something soft. At nightfall
the primrose coils and opens,
dragonflies jouncing into the stone
that encircles us. Wings against pebble,
clattering to their lover’s bed
like a toy. Not a single fruit falls easily
into our palms from the bramble
awning. WE have to touch the bark.
We shake and shake-

HAPPY

I love the dusks of Abu
Dhabi, sky dapples like
fig flesh, that gentle
dying light. Wavering.
The magic of coals. My
body when you light it
like an orchard. The on
who filled a suitcase
with river and danced.
A word in Barcelona,
Muffled soft as cashmere,
While rain falls and the
Birds begin to wake.

This is an eloquent collection of poem songs, worth of internalizing, painting. They are the pregnant beauty of the mind of Hala Alyan. Grady Harp, February 16

A lush and sensual collection
By Madeline
Four Cities is a beautiful collection concerned with themes of immigration, war, religion, sexuality and love. Alyan's words are, without exception, lush, sensual and romantic, calling Neruda to mind. However, unlike Neruda, Alyan maintains a complex threatening undertone, partially because she often speaks of war and violence but also, more subtly, when describing everyday things. In These poems the sea "fumes" a fireworks display is seen "spearing over the lake." Even the way Alyan speaks of desire provokes images of violence: "I want to break myself / like an egg for you. To pool in gold and lost."

My personal favorites were the poems where Alyan turns her attention toward others. In "Z at a Diner in Michigan" she beautifully describes the conflicted life of a Muslim American immigrant. A memorable last line: "I want to say teach / me how to love one country / without hating the other." In "Meimei" she inhabits the stories and sometimes voice of her grandmother--to great effect. A favorite passage:

"She says, I knew a woman who
moved to India for a man, for love. Of
course, cries the Palestinian nurse who
rubs my grandmother's hands and spars
with the bathtub faucet until the water
is warm and strong. The nurse exhales
smoke skyward on the balcony and
looks directly at me. Do women ever
do anything for another reason?"
