But even if your interest is only minimal and you are one of those who think Gurdjieff's book is "out-of-date", read it all the same. All and Everything plus The Method = Sheer Brilliance!

No instant wisdom, without Work and payment. To approach this volume of A.R. Orage (with excellent introduction by the late Anne Staveley, and skilled editing by C.S. Nott) one has to follow Gurdjieff's instruction to read 'All and Everything', 1st series- three times.(in the manner Gurdjieff specifically instructs). 'Beelzebub' has been described as a 'timeless scripture of objective art.' Gurdjieff says, "The answers are not near the doors."

The vital connection is 'The Method', which Orage constantly alludes to, but never describes in precise detail. This Method was taught to Orage and Wilhem Nyland personally by Gurdjieff. When I went to Mr. Nyland's School in 1990, I was graciously given this Gift of the Work-Method. Mr. Nyland, of course had passed years before, but his tenacious and lovingly-loyal students preserved it precisely. Mr. Nyland's lectures were taped, transcribed, and maintained meticulously. I have been practicing the Work-attempt / Method many years and have been astonished with constant verifications of the Higher Objective Plane tens of thousands of miles above this earth!

Orage brings 'Beelzebub' and the Method together so beautifully. Two seemingly different tools are united into a Cosmic Sword. Constant reading and studying 'All and Everything' practiced concurrently with the Practical Gift of the Method / Work attempt- bring about a change in attitude which we begin to Understand and Reason on a more Objective plane. Gurdjieff doesn't describe the Method concisely and clearly in Beelzebub- perhaps he was leaving that for legomonism of his jewel pupils Orage and Nyland. However the supporting principles on many levels are ALL there! Orage in the Commentaries, talks / writes with such an impeccable, surgically clean style, that much light is thrown on 'Beelzebub' but also on the Precious Method. Any serious Gurdjieffian should consider this book an essential 'must read'.

There's Genius in this Perfect Companion Book to THE FIGHT

Brilliant. Moments of genius, particularly when writing about Ali and the fight itself. This short book is at least as good as THE FIGHT -- and it makes the perfect companion read to that, more famous volume. To me, Mailer's all-time best work pertains to Ali and to boxing.

This is the best pressure cooker book I have bought. It has recipes that aren't the old "crock pot-esque" stuff that is so prevalent in other PC cookbooks. I prepared Mr. Ehrlich's Duck Casserole and it was outstanding! For many years, I avoided getting a PC because of it being "dangerous". I remember being scared to death of the ones that my mother and grandmother had, hissing, spitting, Mom and Grams looking at it with big eyes, waiting for it to "explode and burn down the place"!! But the ones on the market now are perfectly safe. I have three of them now and love them. However, some of the PC cookbooks wind up a little lacking. Miss Vickie, the so-called guru of the PC, has within one of her books a section listing the cooking times of "Meats", "Pastas", "Grains", etc but I found that many of the pastas and vegetables were drastically overcooked when I followed her instructions. Anyone want some brussel sprout mush???

Yummy recipes for pressure cooker

I decided to save the environment by using a pressure cooker. Also, as a full time physician, I don't have time to cook during the week so anything that saves time is for me.

My brother Henry Ehrlich (see http://www.amazon.com/Food-Allergies-Traditional-Chinese-Medicine/dp/0984383220) informed me that my brother Richard Ehrlich has written this pressure cooker cook book. Richard is a terrific cook and writer and this book is excellent.

I've only made one recipe from this book, the steamed sponge pudding with jam, and it came out very well. I like the recipes and plan on trying more. The photos are good and it is an enjoyable book to look at.

Contains hundreds of beginner through advanced solos and duets in all fretboard positions and all keys, plus all four-note rhythm chord formations on high, middle and low sets of adjacent strings. This edition also includes additional outstanding plectrum guitar solo arrangements not found in the original seven volumes. All in all, this outstanding method leads the student to total mastery of the fretboard.

About the Author
Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the little Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears Roebuck guitar at the age of 13 and several months later played his first "gig." (He recalled playing until his fingers were raw!) Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to play both instruments. During his teenage years Mel played with a wild assortement of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no "gig" was as strange as the job he landed with, in Mel's words, "a snake oil salesman." This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns mounted on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. After a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and began extolling the merits of his "wonder elixer."

In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and began his professional career. He played with numerous local and traveling bands. In addition, he landed staff guitar jobs on several radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally.

While Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to teach as many as 100 students a week. He decided to begin writing instructional materials due to the difficulty encountered by guitarists at playing good sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the poor note reading ability prevalent among guitarists.

After the war Mel was asked to write instructional materials on guitar for GI's wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and wrote his landmark initial book titled The Orchestral Chord System for Guitar. (This book is still in print under the title Rhythm Guitar Chord System and continues to be one the finest rhythm guitar chord texts available!) His Modern Guitar Method was penned shortly thereafter. For years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay books caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since.

Mel used to sell D'Angelico guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 "lying around the house." Mel played professionally on his New Yorker model but his favorite was the initial Mel Bay Model crafted as a gift for him by John D'Angelico. This famous guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a "cut away" model and had a slightly thinner neck. This instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method for decades.

Someone once calculated that sales of guitar books written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel frequently said that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his Modern Guitar Method have alone surpassed the 7 million mark. It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instruction in this century.

Probably the best "method book" ...

First of all, the original title of the book (when it was written in the late forties) may have been "Modern Guitar Method," so it's not surprising that there have been modern advancements since then. The absence of Whammy tricks or 7-string sludge metal is not the fault of the book, but the fault of an unwise consumer. Do your homework on anything you purchase, because there are other resources available for those recent developments. If guitar has been around for several hundred years, "modern" should at least be enough to differentiate it from "classical" (though I do agree that it shouldn't have been given a title that could become dated in the first place, and they should have thought of that 60 years ago).

The book itself is excellent, but not perfect (I'll say what's good about it later). The whole thing is 320 pages, and like any book that's meant to be played, it would help to have a spiral or plastic comb binding. It is possible to prop it open with things you have laying around though, and I understand that the bookshelf would be an uneven mess if everything were spiral or plastic comb bound.

Also, no one book is a complete learning experience on its own. It's a good idea to have a supplement. The author's explanations of theoretical topics are sporadic, and his other books that go into greater detail are dubious by comparison. I recommend Mel Bay's "Easiest Guitar Theory Book" by Rob Goldsmith.

This book is a compilation of the seven volumes that comprise this method. It would have been nice to have a small indication, perhaps in the margin, of where one volume ends and another begins (for gauging progress, or just curiousity).

There are side panels throughout the book, which are brief explanations of certain things as you go along (the concept of a rest, eighth notes, upstroke, a different time signature, tone, etc.) I haven't worked all the way through it yet (and people who have are probably too busy playing gigs every day/night to stop and write a review), but from what I can tell so far, these side panels are usually timed pretty well. It might explain 3/4 time just before a waltz on the next page. It's still better to have a supplementary book though, or a teacher.

I'd say the best thing about this book is its pacing. It doesn't advance too quickly (Berklee, which is still a good book) or not at all (Hal Leonard, which is not good at all). Any beginner can start after at least several weeks of lessons, and any intermediate player can breeze through the beginning parts until finding a comfortable spot to start working.

A good book with a misleading title

I'm not sure why this book is still being published with the same title that it has at his firts edition back in the late 40's. At that time it was in fact "modern" since the pick wasn't the usual choice in guitar playing and playing in a swing band was the dream of a teenager. Today's problem is that a costumer might buy this book thinking in Rage Against the Machine or the latest Vai Album and feel dissapointed when he finds out about the naked true.

So, the title is misleading, but it is a bad book? Not at all, it's a good book, a very good one, maybe some people prefer examples and excersises that sound in the style of AC/DC or Metallica but, althought I'm a HUGE fan of Angus Young, sometimes I like to play the old fashion way. The book is a progressive method that begins from the very basic and work his way out to very advanced subjects, there is an special enphasis in chord working but I would recommend other book with a more contemporary approach - it seems that his chord system has been thought to be used in the context of the "Big Bands" of that time. Same with the picking instructions, the picking technic has evolved a lot in the last 50 years and you might find it accurate.
However, the theory is very well presented and the secuense of the examples is very appropiate. I've have read some critics saying that the examples are very "old", meaning that they don't like it, but try not to see things that way, music has no age, some examples are very beautiful and prove that there has always been great musicians in this world.
And for technical development, anyone who finish the book will be able to meet most of today demands in contemporary guitar. Of course, you won't become Pat Metheny with this book alone but it will give you a very good technical foundation.
Do I recomend it? Yes, I do. But please, look at it as what it is and don't expect "modern" stuff as the title seems to promise but also don't treath it like if it were an outmoded piece of junk, is not.

Guitar Players Can Read Music Too

This guitar method teaches students to read actual music notation rather than tabs. It progresses gradually through all scales, chords, and arpeggios for the entire fretboard like Leavitt's Berklee Press, A MODERN METHOD FOR GUITAR, but in a less intensive format. It also uses familiar songs arranged according to grade level rather than original pieces.

It was disappointing to see that errors in notation in early editions were not corrected in this update. A spiral binding would have been a better choice.

Overall, however, it will give the serious student plenty of information and a beginning repertoire of songs to play.

The only book our 10-month old sits still for!

He gets bored with regular old board books, but this one really captures his attention (he'll sit through it 2-3 times in a row!) There are many different animals, so you can use a lot of different voices. Cute illustrations.

This is my 1 year old's favorite book

My 1 year old son got this for his birthday and loved from the first time I read it. He loves "peeking" under the flaps and finding the different animals. The bright colors are wonderful, and this is a nice change from the Board type books we usually read. You can use many voices for the different animals and he has learned the animal sounds from reading this book. It is fabulous and I am going to buy the other ones in the series.

Although a broad collection of intriguing energy technology research is described in this book, it is annoying to read. Not only does it lack footnotes or references for any technical details but the author consistently asserts that the researchers described have been treated inappropriately and meanspiritedly. For example, Nikola Tesla couldn't obtain adequate funding and so was frozen out of the energy field. John Keely received funding but was pressured for quick results, causing his ruination. One third of the book deals with individuals working on "free/space energy" or "zero-point energy"?the untapped energy that exists in space. The rest of the book deals with other technologies?cold fusion, hydrogen, water hammers, etc.?and the problems their advocates have encountered. While some of these technologies do show promise, the author feels they have all been deliberately suppressed?either by government, big business, or the media. She ignores the practicality question and simply concludes that conspiracy and/or persecution explain why more progress hasn't been made. Great book! I've researched "free energy" for more than 22 years myself and this was the 1st book I could give to friends to explain the whole scene to them. It gives the history, like Tesla, Moray, Reich, Schauberger, and it shows you how big (and growing fast) the New Energy field is today. It also gives enough information for the researcher to direct his or her interests to the inventor that they wish to focus and further their attention on. This would save the researcher alot of time, as Jeane Manning has done all of the foot work for you in this book.

Journalistically exciting, but scientifically inept.

Manning's book is an assiduous review of exciting new energy technology. Unfortunately, Manning is a sociologist, not a hard scientist, and she is way out of her element trying to comprehend and explain the work of new energy inventors. As a result, the book leaves far more unanswered than answered. She needed a physicist as a co-author. Still, worth reading to grasp the scope and promise of new energy technologies; but the scientifically knowledgeable reader will want far more than it delivers.

The author has searched out a lot of obscure persons doing research which, if successful could turn the golbal economy upside down, and change life on earth. She does not, however, follow up on the latest status of the inventions, or follow the logical next question about why none of these devices are ever tested or shown publicly. Although interesting, the book is very light on technology details and investigative initiative.

About the Author
Mark Tungate is a journalist specializing in marketing, media, and communication. He is the author of best-selling Fashion Brands, as well as Adland: A Global History of Advertising, Branded Male and Media Monoliths (all published by Kogan Page). Based in Paris, he has a weekly column in the French media magazine Strategies, and writes regularly about advertising, style and popular culture for the trends intelligence service WGSN. His work has appeared in The Times, The Independent and the Daily Telegraph newspapers. He is also the co-author of The Epica Book, an annual review of the best European advertising. In addition, Mark teaches courses about marketing, media and communication at Parsons Paris School of Design. Adding substance to the concept of Lux

Though an admirer of luxury goods I am a consumer only in a limited fashion and never of overtly branded items. Never-the-less I'm fascinated with understanding what propels the market; whether it's the product quality and workmanship or a frailty of our thinking and emotion which compels us to crave the association.

The book Luxury World, in its sublimely readable style, properly researched and opinioned, has gone a long way assisting the understanding of why and wherefore we crave to identify with luxury. I appreciate the insights from the creators of the craft, with whom I certainly would never have the opportunity to directly communicate.

Someone had to do it and this writer/journalist has done it exceptionally well.

An excellent read for anyone genuinely interested, for business or personal reasons, in the luxury goods world.

Luxury world: The Past, Presert and Future of Luxury Brands by Mark Tungate

This book have a detailed oberview of luxury producers, brands, intermediaries in the world, and in some new regions for the luxurt (like BRIC). Author gave his detailed analysis of existing positioning of luxury product, and also gave some predictions what will happened with luxury after recession, and in a new anvironment of rellocation of pusrchasing power in world's regions, and also in changing of consumer behavior.
