Can't put it down

The book title grabbed me and hasn't released its grip. This is a great book and Pastor Anyabwile brings the taboo subject of how things have gone sideways in the "Black Church" to the forefront. I'm 48 and raised as COGIC atmosphere but now Baptist. I recently felt "the call" and as I was waiting to meet with my pastor to talk about my aspiration, I came across this book. I now use this book as my guide of what not to do in ministry and how the Bible should kept centered in the preachment moment. This book isn't for everyone but for those who want to revive dead areas in their church this book is a must have. And for those inspiring leaders this book is INVALUABLE.

Great read but has ethnic bias...

Thabiti has his pulse on the autopsy of preaching in church today. My only complain about this book is he author's use of the term "The Black Church". I believe preaching be it good or bad is not limited to the confines of ethnicity. If Thabiti will cross out the word "black", it is my belief he would reach more people with this message.

The Man Who Thought Different

This book resembles a parable for young readers. The author used the three stories from Steve Jobs' Stanford commencement address as themes. These themes were then fleshed-out with details of his life, from the interesting and inspiring, to the less-than-admirable aspects of his personality. Throughout, she used language and descriptions appropriate for a young audience. The Man Who Thought Different is a story of a life of searching, striving, resilience, and maturation.

I found the following especially interesting:

Jobs respected Akio Morita of Sony for his appreciation of beauty, and Edward Land of Polaroid, for wanting his company to be at the intersection of art and science.

The production of computer-animated movies requires algebra, geometry, and integral calculus. Pixar has several staff PhDs, including a physicist that specializes in air and water.

"Reed's tuition and fees for the 1972-73 year were $3,950 (about $21,400 in today's dollars)." I recall this figure as correct. I was invited by Reed College to consider studying there, to start in the same school year as Jobs. But, coming from a Hawaiian sugar plantation, I couldn't afford the cost. I attended the University of Hawaii for about $400 a year.

HTML, HTTP, and the first browser were created on a NeXT computer. Jobs believed that his machine was for interpersonal computing.

Perhaps this book could become a classic for future generations of young readers, and the young-at-heart.

I didn't learn anything new. I had just finished reading Walter Isaacson's biography, which I thoroughly enjoyed and I was looking for a different slant, or new material.

A must read for our times

This book surprised me because I could not put it down. Typically a biography of this nature is not my usual pick for reading, however I found the book to be fascinating. The book flows and keeps your attention, it kept me up late reading it. Steve Jobs certainly is an important man of our times to understand and this book lays out all aspects of him, the genius, the jerk and the quirky!

Reconstructing history

In 1986, the Worcester Pilgrim burial site was accidentally discovered in the Cathedral. A 15th century man was found buried under the tower, dressed for a pilgrim journey. This unusual find inspired Lack, a scholar in church history, to become a historical detective and make some guesses about his identity and about the trip which defined his life so much that he wanted to be buried in its symbolic costume.

Lack tentatively identifies the pilgrim as Robert Sutton, an educated urban tradesman from the early 15th century who had apparently made the long arduous trek from Worcester to Compostela in Spain. She then reconstructs what his probable journey would have been, going so far as to include possible timeframes and the corresponding physical and political conditions that would have been part of the trip.

The book is structured so that it largely focuses on the trip itself. In the first three chapters, she covers the identity of the pilgrim and his potential motivations. From that point in the book forward, the book is structured as steps in the pilgrimage-- going from England, to Brittany, to Armagnac France, to Navarre and finally arriving at the Camino in Castile.

As a historical reconstruction, the book is fascinating. She brings an obvious wealth of research to the reader and weaves a convincing and concrete narrative about what the Compostela could have been like for Sutton. I enjoyed and applauded her use of small details which did not distract from the text and added enough verasimilitude to keep the read smooth and fast. Lack makes an effort to capture the emotional side of pilgrimage as well, in a way that resonated as realistic and helped provide a character arc to the depicted journey.

Unfortunately, if you are looking for facts about the medieval pilgrimage, the book can sometimes be a little bit frustrating. Although Lack throws out tantalizing anecdotes and details, its structure around the pilgrim narrative keeps her from any larger and potentially interesting digressions about the factual aspects. Not a book about starting a record label. Nominally discusses some rudimentary information about incorporating a business. Even that is pretty sketchy. It seems like it was written in a taxi. I was looking for something a little more in-depth than "you need to know people," and "you need to find some good musicians."

Terrific Introduction to the World of Big Data

Big data is changing the world of marketing; this book will convince you to embrace the opportunity. It isn't a detailed guide to using specific digital tools. It is compelling call for action.

I was struck by two points. First, a business simply can't ignore the digital opportunity; by the time you actually see a customer, they almost certainly have interacted with your brand in several different ways. Anyone going into marketing or branding has to be comfortable working in this world. Second, it is complicated. There are so many different technologies and platforms; at times I found the book over-whelming.

I liked the suspense and action that was there at times to really keeps the reader who liked this filthy language from one or two of his main characters. And it seemed to have taken a along,long time to get there. WOW! I found it to be just too full of bad language and taking God's name in vain,etC. I really do not care to read this author's ebook again,sorry Joseph but you turned me away from ever reading books like yours. Because you did have a way to keep the reader reading it till the end with some some suspense but yet used way too much profanity later in your ebook this is why I am giving this ebook only four stars.

Ok if you know nothing about HVAC than this book is for you but if you are a beginner our worked for a mechanical contractor for more than a week this book will be useless for you.
