Brilliant Tour De Force on Leadership

I use Level Three Leadership when I teach in a university master's program in organizational leadership. (I supplement it with Annie McKee's and Richard Boyatzis' Becoming a Resonant Leader.) Students like the book, particular more experienced, mid-level corporate and healthcare leaders. I just love it! It's a brilliant tour de force about the nature of leadership, how to be a leader, how to influence others in an ethical way. Despite not being a mental health professional himself, Clawson is able to explain the psychological underpinnings of leadership and convey it in a way others can understand. His is a unique model of leadership. And he's able to tie it all in with newer theory and practice around employee engagement and moving organizations from (what I think about as) command-and-control structures to collaborative-and-cooperative ones. I remember reading Level Three Leadership for the first time during a summer vacation a couple of years ago. I kept getting up (and annoying my wife) regularly with comments about how much the book was in sync with and expanded my own thinking about organizations and leadership. I continue to be excited about the book and engaging my students around its principles.

Does not load on Kindle Paperwhite!

Above was my initial review, and while it's true that the inability to load the digital book on my Kindle, and the lack of clear messaging for new Kindle users that this book will not load on their device is a detriment, I felt that it was only fair to add my opinion of the teachings within the book, and have adjusted my rating from a 1 to a 4 because I really liked what I learned from the book.
I purchased "Level Three Leadership" for an upper-level undergraduate management class, a class that is mostly online and self-directed. Having never taken a management course before, I found the information presented there-in to be both valuable and useful. There is much information about management styles and models, and about the changing face of leadership in the modern age. I have changed my rating because:
- I learned a lot from this book about management.
- I learned a lot from this book that translates into other areas of my life as well.
- I was fond of the accuracy of the wording that the author used to convey his meaning. He was very accurate and eloquent unto the point that I was often unable to transpose his words in my notes without changing the meaning, which is a level of specificity that I like to see in a good textbook.

Average at best

This is a book on leadership but seems to just borrow leadership ideas from others. Nothing really new in the book. The author draws some simplistic diagrams that do not really do much to add to the concepts of leadership. This text was required for the master's class I am taking but there are bobetter texts that could have been used. Don't expect anything new or exciting out the book. I was reading an article about Chik-fil-A's development of a leadership program. In the article, Mark Miller, VP for Training and Development, mentioned that the Chik-fil-A staff working on the leadership development program read approximately 200 books on leadership. This would not have been one of the ones I would have recommended for that list.
