About the Author
Adam Roberts is 36 and a Senior Reader in English at London University. His first novel, "Salt" was nominated for the Arthur C Clarke Award. Aside from his numerous novels, he has also published a number of academic works on both 19th century poetry and SF. He currently resides in London.

Benedict Kingsbury is Murry and Ida Becker Professor of Law and director of the Institute for International Law and Justice at New York University School of Law. In addition to being co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law he is the editor and co-editor of over fifteen books, including International Financial Institutions and Global Legal Governance (2011).

Probably the most comprehensive and useful book on the UN

Oxford academic Adam Roberts, long considered the most influential expert on the subject of the UN system, has produced an excellent book, with great academic rigour, very comprenehsive, and very concise (or at least as concise as it could possibly be, given the enormous amount and variety of issues covered therein). With great ability, the author manages to highlight the positive and negative sides of the UN system and its work, criticizing them where appropriate and by giving very thorough explanations, and praising them in other respects. It offers information and analysis on the major challenges confronted by the UN in the recent past, and those likely to arise in the near future. The book is an absolute must for anyone wishing to know more on the UN system. It is suitable both for those intending to learn the basics, and those who are on a start of deep research work on the subject. It is a serious academic study, yet easy to read and even enjoyable.

I think this book is more easily readable and understood than Stumm and Morgan

This book is extremely readable with lots of detailed narratives and explanations. The material is presented very logically in a manner any graduate student can understand. I wish the pictures were in color but at this level, it is probably not standard practice. The acid/base equilibrium discussion is unparalleled. I think this book is more easily readable and understood than Stumm and Morgan. I highly recommend this book to anyone perusing water quality engineering. Metals are also discussed in extensive detail. For anyone who works with the clean water act, this book is a must-have.

Many rural communities in South Carolina share a place in World War II history that has largely been forgotten. From 1943 to 1946, towns such as Aiken, Florence, Camden, Spartanburg, and York were enthusiastic hosts for a special group of laborers: German prisoners of war. These prisoners from the North African, Sicilian, and European campaigns filled needed jobs, mostly in agriculture, all across the nation. In South Carolina, prison camps were established in rural areas where labor was needed in agriculture, the lumber industry, and a few manufacturing jobs. Prisoner labor was also used on military bases to free civilian and army personnel for front-line duty. By the end of W.W.II, over 425,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners were interned in prisoner of war camps in the United States. In South Carolina, the War Department established more than twenty camps in seventeen counties housing 8,000 to 11,000 German prisoners. These prisoners provided much needed labor in agricultural communities and were often the only direct connection with the "enemy" experienced on the home front. This book explores the general policies of the United States toward captured prisoners of war and to analyze their implementation in South Carolina from the perspectives of the American officials, the German prisoners, and the communities that housed the camps. This book examines the history of prisoners of war in South Carolina, focusing on life behind the wire, the labor performed by POWs, and the impact of this labor in South Carolina, the adherence to the Geneva Convention, attitudes that influenced policies for the treatment of prisoners, local reaction to the POWs and their labor, as well as the prisoners' impressions of the conditions in which they were held.

"In her thoroughly researched and timely book, Ms. Deann Bice Segal gives us a glimpse of the 8,000 to 11,000 German Prisoners of war who found themselves incarcerated in South Carolina during the Second World War. These POWs, "the enemy among us" or the so-called "Supermen" of the 1940's were mysterious to the people of rural South Carolina who, as the war continued, needed laborers to assist in agriculture, the lumber industry and manufacturing. Ms. Segal tells us about the complex relationships that arose in southern communities and among American government agencies that, in wartime, developed policies for accommodating the prisoners who lived in the camps. The author goes further, however, than official documents and strengthens her analysis by including details from interviews with former POWs (such as German sailor Albert Brathe) and the residents of the Carolina towns which hosted the Germans. As Ms. Segal writes, her book examines "life behind the wire" (e.g., food and health care), the benefits to the state's economy, local adjustments to the foreigners, and the prisoners' impressions of the conditions in which they were held. All of this occurred, as the author stresses, in an era in which the Geneva Convention guidelines for POWs were relatively untested... This study is thoughtfully prepared and sharply presented. The Dystopian Duo

Could this novel really be mentioned in the same sentence with 1984? I was especially skeptical after reading WE -- another precursor and influence, but strangely whimsical and largely impenetrable to this American reader. However, Kallocain deserves consideration alongside 1984, ad indeed they are a duo. On the one hand, much of their inspiration came from Nazi Germany and Stalin and they both portray life in a futuristic, nightmarish, totalitarian state.

But there are major differences as well, such that 1984 and Kallocain are both fresh, unique approaches to a shared interest.

If Orwell tended toward the political and cultural diagnosis of the totalitarian state, Boye focuses on its implications for the human heart, without being sentimental. Orwell's Winston Smith does fall in love, but it is a love affair written up by an Englishman. There is sex and coffee and jam, and that very British mix of deep feeling and tenuous expression. Orwell is strongest elsewhere, in the realm of political theory and the subservience of culture to power. Boye, in contrast, brings her poetic sensibilities to bear on the interior lives of people living in the World State to great effect. Orwell's many contraptions -- Newspeak, the many offices, etc.--are not sources of fascination in Kallocain. This is a book about interior lives.

Another marked difference concerns our protagonists. Orwell's Winston Smith is as heroic a figure as one could hope for in his dystopia. From the beginning, we are sympathetic and rooting for him, knowing full well that he is doomed. And Smith does follow the arc from saved to damned. But Boye's Leo Kall is a faithful cog in the machine, loathsome with, at best, momentary flickers of humanity. Credibly, he changes and follows the arc from damned to ... well, we are left with optimism, but no promise. Kall ends where Smith begins. In this sense, Kallocain is less dark, ending with the message that each reader, has within him or her, the green bit of life that troubles the despot because it makes love possible.

If you liked 1984, you are doing yourself a major disservice by not reading this book. Like 1984, it is a compelling read with forward momentum. And it a cautionary tale that, it seems to me, can never be retold often enough.

The Worldstate of Kallocain appeared in print eight years before Orwell's famous story of totalitarian hell. Although weaker in some ways, it has more emotional impact in many others. It's about Kall, a chemist and loyal Fellow-Soldier of The State. His work re-opens earlier, failed studies on "truth serum" drugs. His new compounds eliminate the earlier drugs' toxic effects, the effect that destroyed the minds of so many human guinea pigs from the Voluntary Sacrificial Service. This time, the more merciful drug simply leaves its victims as passive, even cooperative partners in their own violation - the perverted wish of physical and mental rapists everywhere.

Idealist Kall sees only its potential to help the life-giving state against its enemies, at first. Of course, he sees his invention turned to the self-serving power struggles of the party oligarchs. He sees how having that drug's power corrupts its possessor, even seeing that corruption arise in himself. By then, the evil genie is out of the bottle and granting the wishes of the oppressive State.

The end of the book seems to wander. Kall sees the full force of The State's anti-terrorist army directed against a nameless little band of dreamers. He takes part in vaguely horrific trials for capital crimes against The State, with executions handed down apparently on whims and personal grudges. He ends his story with ambiguous dreams, still hoping that his pharmacological creation can live on, and still hoping (against evidence) that it can be used for genuine good.

It's worth reading, though. It captures the fears of its early Soviet and pre-Nazi era, and captures the time's faith (and fear) in the power of science. And it reminds technologists that, although scientific results have no inherent morality, the people who create and use those results do - or should.

Surprisingly the Right Book

I was so surprised to find this book for such an inexpensive price. From the original publishing company, it is impossible to find it for under $100, so when I told my professor I had found it for an extremely low price, she didn't believe I had found the right book. She thought it was the workbook or something. Lo and behold when it came it was the exact book I needed, just by a different publisher. Sure, it has a different cover, but the content and pagination are the same, so I am having no problems in class. As a poor college student, I would recommend buying this version. You get the same book for less money leaving both you and your bank account happy.

Scholarly, in-depth survey of the history of the English language

This book reviews the history and evolution of the English language from ancient times to the present. The authors do so in a methodical, scholarly manner that provides a thorough, in-depth look at how the English language (a member of the Indo-European family of languages) developed and changed over time in the context of social, religious, political and military, and economic events in English history.

At the end of each chapter is an extensive bibliography that will provide interested readers with numerous leads to additional and supplemental reading materials. The book is scholarly and academic, and not suitable for readers with only a casual interest in the history of the English language. Anyone studying the history of the English language for the first time should consider looking at more basic, introductory publications before trying this book.

Apart from readers with a scholarly interest in historical linguistics, this book could be of interest as a reference book for teachers and instructors of English as a Second Language (ESL). Although this book does not provide material that could be readily used in an ESL class, its discussion of how the English language developed and changed over time could help ESL teachers and instructors better understand some of historical reasons behind various aspects of the English language that often are difficult to explain to English language learners. A less technical book on history of the English language that is specifically addressed to ESL teachers and instructors is Norbert Schmitt and Richard Marsden, Why Is English Like That?: Historical Answers to Hard ELT Questions (Michigan Teacher Training).

Interesting

Needed this book for my history and structure of the English language class. It is a bit dry at times, but for the most part the book is a good read and it is interesting to learn about how much our language has changed through the years.

About the Author
Scott B. Williams is a writer with a passion for exploring and outdoor adventures on land and sea. An avid sea kayaker, sailor and boatbuilder, he has written seven nonfiction books and two novels and continues to write for magazines in addition to his blogs on boat building, sailing, and outdoor survival.

Scott Finazzo co-authored The Prepper's Workbook, which quickly became a national best seller, with Scott B. Williams and followed it up with the narrative of his kayak adventure through the Virgin Islands with two friends in self built sea kayaks titled Why Do All the Locals Think We're Crazy?. In the summer of 2015 Scott continued on the topic of public safety with the release of his third book The Neighborhood Emergency Response Handbook. Most recently Scott released Prepper's Survival Medicine and Prepper's Guide to Knots.

He has a Bachelor's Degree in Management and Human Relations and two Associate's Degrees. He currently lives in Lenexa, Kansas until he can relocate somewhere under a palm tree.

This book is a keeper for your emergency kit and will not sit on your shelf and collect dust!

This book is NOT another one of those doomsday/ zombie apocalypse prepper books. It's a clear and concise "how-to" book that walks you through all of the key essentials that everyone needs to consider BEFORE emergency strikes. What makes this book different is the workbook format that provides an interactive space for you and your loved ones to document important personal information as well as practical checklists that walk you through the basic items that you need for personal emergencies, major catastrophes, or natural disasters.

As a military veteran and now international business traveler, I've traveled the world and lived in many different states and countries. These experiences put me in direct alignment with 3 natural disasters (hurricane, earthquake, & tornado) as well as civil unrest, multiple home break-in's, and long-term utility & water outages. It's one thing to survive an emergency situation or natural disaster but it's the aftermath that most people (including myself) grossly underestimate. If I knew then what I know now, I would definitely have prepared and educated myself more proactively with this book.

This book is a keeper! It's not the kind of book you read then put on the shelf to collect dust. It's one that will initiate a life-saving dialogue with your family & friends, in addition to being a staple in your emergency safety kit and/or bug out bag.

This book will save your life.

I've been a prepper for years and have bought the range of prepping books. This one is bar far the BEST available. Even for the experienced prepper, this has everything you need all put together in one very organized book.
And for the person/family that's new to prepping, it breaks it down in a way that is totally manageable and not scary.

An excellent tool for preparing

Before I received my copy of The Prepper's Workbook, I was expecting it to be similar to all the other "Prepper" books out there. I was expecting advice such as "get to know your area before a disaster strikes" and maybe some examples from Katrina. Not to say that those tips and examples aren't helpful, and this book does have information like that, but this book contains quite a bit more than that too. Several other reviews have stated about how this book is meant to be written in. I however cannot get over how much more this book is meant to be customized than just notes. There are not only areas to take notes, but also blank areas to add to individual checklists, photo areas for your family and pets in case you get separated, areas to draw layouts (like for your house) and whole page areas to put maps of your surrounding area or evacuation routes. All of that customization is interspersed with the expert knowledge and experience of the authors. This book is a tool, and and it should be used just as much during a disaster or 'bug out' situation as it should before one. It is also just as much an asset to novice prepper as it is to the experienced prepper. This book has not earned a place on my bookshelf, because it is going to be either in use or in my bag right next to me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to prepare for even the slightest disaster, or disruption from daily life.

The Best $3 you'll ever spend on this subject

I bought this book as I read this author's EXCELLENT section in the Men's Health book on Cardio Strength Training (By Robert Dos Remedios - also well worth a look by the way). It was so simple, practical and concise I wanted to read more.

I bought this book 40 mins ago and have read it cover to cover. His six pillars of nutrition are simple, science-based and he avoids all the faddish nonsense that people who write 'diet' books normally aim for.

His section on organic food is very good and even includes a list the fruit/veg that are best to buy as organic (The Dirty Dozen) and the ones you don't need to waste the extra dollars on (The Clean Fifteen). Brilliant.

I've lost count of the health/nutrition/fat loss books I've read, and as far as I am concerned this is the best $3 and 40 mins you'll ever spend on a book on the subject.

Dr. Roussell has a very simple and effective method

Dr. Mike Roussell has explained his method of fat loss and healthy living very well in this short and sweet book. The 6 Pillars of Nutrition could have been explained in much more scientific detail if that was his goal, but instead Roussell speaks a language we can understand and gives information that can be put to use immediately.

As a trainer, Roussell and his methods have impacted the approach I take with my clients and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with weight loss and is ready for a better solution.

finally someone who understands the phenomenon

aligns with my view that beppe grillo is not the "ex-comic" or whatever traditional media ascribe, but the first example of how democracy evolves. the end of representative democracy.

I had no idea what I was getting into with this single. I didn't enjoy it at all. It seems very academic and it's hard to enjoy.
