Best book on the history of Blue and White China

I read this book, cover to cover back in the mid 1980's. I even made notes, which I can no longer find.

In doing research on the history of porcelain, this book tops my list for Blue& White. For years I have not been able to track it down, but now I see it advertised in Victoria Magazine ! I feel as though I have found an old friend...who has now become famous...Voila!

This is a beautiful book, and the cover alone draws in us blue-and-white fanatics of the world. It is an important book as well, in the world of learning about, collecting, and appreciating our favorite china. We need all the help we can get (!), and this book should be the first one we buy to start a library on the subject.
I would recommend it to anyone whose dreams -- and shelves -- are filled with blue and white.

best review of the history of the institution of property I have read

This is the best historical review of the institution of private property in the US that I have read. Unlike many scholarly books, it is written in very clear prose without a lot of technical jargon (at least, what technical jargon is deployed is explained). Highly recommended. Holds up to multiple readings. Very relevant to many current land-use debates. I appreciate also - even if I do not share - his optimism. One can only hope he is right and that we can manage to foster a better social stewardship of the land.

Must read for Conservationists

"Few ideas have bred more mischief in recent times, for the beauty and health of landscapes and communities, than the belief that privately owned land is first and foremost a market commodity that its owner can use in whatever way earns the most money." So begins a remarkable study of the changing views of private property throughout American history. The dynamic tension is between land health, in the Leopoldian sense, and unfettered freedom. Freyfogle explores the major common law doctrines dealing with private property, as well as evolving statute law. Interwoven throughout the book are reviews of relevant Supreme Court cases. Landowner rights are seen as a "bundle" of rights that are subject to change as societal priorities shift. Although the book is fundamentally about law, it does not at all read like a legal brief. It is a very engaging read. Freyfogle reviews in detail the "tragedy of the commons", contrasting it with his own "tragedy of fragmentation." The two prophets that serve as his muses are Aldo Leopold and Wendell Berry. It is clear that we are going to have to rethink property law issues as we begin to face the limits of our growth. Freyfogle's book will be an important guidebook for us for years to come as we begin to grapple with these issues.

Reading this book has made me probe the fundamental assumptions that I make about what it means to own land. This book presents a fresh and very well-sustained argument that private land ownership entails public responsibilities. It also discusses what those might include. The author weaves together legal and general history, philosophy, economic theory, conservation writings, ecology, and literature into an engaging and telling story about the institution of private property in America.

Great final preparation

I used this when preparing for evidence final. Unlike many law school courses, my final was an objective multiple choice test with three short answers. Practicing multiple choice questions for my test preparation probably helped my final grade. I was able to find a rhythm for how I would answer the questions on test day. As for the substance, it does have some state common law but it is predominately the Federal Rules. It expanded on some of the rules discussed in class. Some questions did not apply to my course. For example, the professor only tested the Federal Rules.

In short, other than the professor's prior tests, this is the best source of practice questions.

Gay-Themed Fantasy Page Turner That More Than Holds Its Own Against Other Books In the Genre

Citiyo Dreams is an interesting supernatural-fantasy tale about a young man named Citiyo Jackson who discovers that the world isn't quite the way he had always thought it to be. While arriving to school one morning with his best friend Ruby, he meets a charismatic young man named Jon. Jon, as it turns out, possesses a number of supernatural abilities along with the rest of his family. As Citiyo is drawn in to the drama of Jon's life, the two begin to fall in love with one another, but ultimately this love is tested by fate and forces seemingly beyond their control. Ultimately, Citiyo discovers that he also possesses great powers, but must learn how to control them in order to not hurt the ones around him who he cherishes the most.

One could easily say that this is a gay version of Twilight, but that wouldn't do Citiyo Dreams justice. Author Jamie Assiah does a remarkably good job at teasing out Citiyo's complex personality, that seems torn between obligations to family and the desire to make his own path in life. He already faces stigmatization due to being biracial, but the loneliness he feels is only compounded by his sexual orientation. The supporting characters are also drawn beautifully, including the lovely minister's daughter Ruby and the ever-supportive yet bluntly speaking grandpa.

Above all else, Citiyo Dreams is an emotionally-satisfying, provocative tale that will keep readers turning the page. In fact, it is easy enough to read the whole novel in just two sittings, because it is just that good. The love between Jon and Citiyo is authentic, and isn't rushed or over sexual. It develops slowly during the course of the novel, and I was more than happy to follow this transformation of their relationship as it blossomed. Overall, it is rare to find a homosexual relationship portrayed in fantasy fiction that isn't overtly sexual and reduced tor random acts of sex. With Jon and Citiyo, the reader cares for them and their relationship, and that helps to set up the emotional drama that follows as the story reaches its end.

The ending itself really showcases the talents of the writer Jamie Assiah. Unlike so many other books within the fantasy genre, the resolution to the story isn't wrapped in a neat package where everything is worked out for the better and life seems perfect. Instead, the ending is true to the way things often happen in the real world. Citiyo must endure difficult lessons and accept hard truths in order to grow as an individual and follow his own journey in life. At the conclusion, he has become a different man, but hasn't fully achieved everything he desires.

Im not the kind who would read a book like this but props gotta be given where they are due. Well written with believable characters and a well thought out plot. I could see this appeal to those who liked Twilight although it's more like it shares the same genre rather than being a wannabe or copycat.

Guess Kindle has become some sorta clearinghouse for wannabe authors who put out lacklustre books who never would have been published otherwise but this is an exception and well worth reading. Very original.

Grisone's treatise and the riding masters trained at his riding academy in Naples, Italy, spread the practice of the art of manège riding to courts throughout Europe. Twenty-three Italian editions of the text were published between 1550 and 1620 and the treatise was translated into French, English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Many of the concepts Grisone discusses in his treatise--such as developing contact between horse and rider and collection in the horse--are still major tenets of modern dressage riding. The haute école or High School movements of classical dressage are still practiced today by such traditional academies such as the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria and the Cadre Noir in Saumur, France.

Federico Grisone published Gli ordini di cavalcare (The Rules of Riding) in 1550,

Elizabeth MacKenzie Tobey received her Bachelor's of Arts in Art History from Smith
College in 1993 and her Master's and Doctoral degrees in Art History & Archaeology at
the University of Maryland in 1997 and 2005 respectively. Dr. Tobey has incorporated
a lifelong interest in horses into her scholarship on equestrian culture in early modern
Italy and has worked at the National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg,
Virginia and at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. Currently
she is working for the University System of Maryland on the Gates/Ithaka Project, and
pursuing a Masters in Library Science at the University of Maryland.

Federica Brunori Deigan was born and raised in Italy, where she received a "laurea"
in Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University of Rome La sapienza and a
professional diploma from the School for Interpreters of Rome. She obtained her Ph.D.
in Italian Studies from the Johns Hopkins University in 2005. She has taught Italian language,
literature, and culture at Hopkins, at the University of Pennsylvania, and at the University
of Maryland at College Park, where she is currently a Senior Lecturer in Italian. Her
research interests are the Italian national identity and the history and literature of the 19th
century and 20th century.

Franz Zeier, a Swiss designer, has taught bookbinding at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich for over two decades. He has exhibited work in numerous shows and is the author of a book on design with paper.

The Art of Containing Space

I dabble in photography as an art form. One of the things I like to do is make a series of prints and assemble them into a bound book or portfolio. I have worked with several very fine book/album makers in the design. My only problem is that the process is costly, even though it can be deeply satisfying.
It was several years ago that the urge came upon me to investigate making of books and portfolios myself. While casting about among a limited set of resources, I came upon Franz Zeier's guide. It has been my guidepost ever since. In fact, it is a measure of Zeier's success that this volume has been in print in English for 12 years and is still in print.
Zeier's objective, to provide clear instructions for building many paper-based objects without the need for mechanical tools. Nor does he focus on decorative techniques. Because of this, he does not investigate leather binding, blind and gold tooling, gilt edges, decorated papers, and other such additions. He believes that the opportunities afforded by the basic, 'preliminary' techniques are sufficiently enough to satisfy the many of the creative urges of hobbyists and craftsmen.
The text addresses materials, techniques, solids, mats, boxes, portfolios, books and albums in a straightforward, easy to follow fashion. The book itself is extremely well made, obviously intended for survival in the workshop. An interesting feature is that Zeier eschews photographs, preferring to illustrate his techniques with drawings. I think this works well, because a drawing can emphasize the important parts of a process better than a camera can.
