Connecting With Consumers: Marketing For New Marketplace Realities, by Allan J. Kimmel

These are exciting times for business managers and marketing professionals, yet the challenges imposed by ongoing social and technological developments are daunting. In an age in which marketers can reach their audiences with greater facility than ever before, firms have never been less in control of their customer targets.

This increasing connectedness of consumers provides a range of unique and promising opportunities for product and brand managers. Connecting With Consumers describes the various strategies and techniques that can be utilized to harness consumer influence. The book traces evolving developments in the consumer marketplace, considers their impact on the potential reshaping of the marketing profession, and describes the emerging set of tools that can enable marketers to respond to new marketplace realities. It provides, clear, up-to-date coverage of a number of topics currently on the minds of many: Web 2.0, word of mouth, buzz, the social web, social media metrics, customer engagement, viral and guerrilla marketing.

The book critically assesses emerging marketing strategies and tools within the context of research and theory, and provides numerous applied examples to illustrate marketing successes and common pitfalls to avoid. It argues throughout for a more collaborative relationship between companies and consumers towards their mutual benefit. Although the balance of power has shifted to the consumer for each of the various aspects of the marketing process, collaboration is what the future of marketing likely will be all about. Marketers can avoid irrelevance in the face of change, but this will require a clear commitment to connecting with consumers rather than searching for ways to regain control over them.

The book challenges marketers to make a choice: embrace the ongoing changes as opportunities for reshaping relationships with consumers, or cling to the past at the risk of becoming irrelevant. This is the book for those who choose the first alternative.

A research-oriented overview of why marketers must adopt social networking technology
By Rolf Dobelli
While replowing much of the same landscape as other social media marketing guides, this academic treatise offers two appealing, redeeming features: numerous fresh examples of campaigns which illustrate specific tactics and, for the academically inclined, an extensive bibliography of market research papers and articles. Professor of marketing Allan J. Kimmel focuses on how new media change the practice of marketing, but his presentation suffers from repetition and overuse of labels and diagrams. Perhaps this is the byproduct of the deluge of marketing research and new theories that drive the advertising business. getAbstract recommends this well-researched book to research-driven marketers, academics and marketing researchers.

The Parables of Jesus, by James Montgomery Boice

"Some sections of the Bible give us grand theology. Some move us to grateful responses to God. But the parables break through mere words and make us ask whether there has indeed been any real difference in our lives."

In this beloved classic, James Boice takes us systematically through the parables of Jesus, grouping them into five categories: parables of the kingdom, salvation, wisdom and folly, the Christian life, and judgment.

In each section Boice brings Jesus' words to bear on life today. Through his careful study and clear explanation of each parable—born from a sermon series he preached at the Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, where he pastored for 32 years—he helps us understand just what Jesus meant, and how our hearts and lives ought to respond.

Jesus' parables are memorable for a reason. Discover their power for yourself.

Excellent explanations and solid theology!
By Simple Mann
It is a joy to read the works of the late James Boice. He was one of those teachers who not only had a passion for God's word and a solid grasp of theological doctrine, he also had an amazing ability to gently explain even the most difficult concepts in ways that are easily digestible. The Foundations of the Christian Faith is just another great example of this.

In the Parables of Jesus, James Boice takes a look at 22 parables spoken by our Lord, separating them into five different categories based on their main application. He groups them into parables of the Kingdom, parables of Salvation, parables of Wisdom and Folly, parables of the Christian Life, and parables of Judgment. He walks the reader through each parable, discussing the overall theme of the parable and then examining the details and meanings of the imagery used by the Lord in these instructive stories.

These parables were not new to me, and for most of them I had a pretty good idea what Jesus was teaching in His use of them. But even those parables I felt I already had a handle on, I gained additional insight into because of the sound exposition by Boice.

There were a couple of parables he explained that I thought I understood before, but that completely surprised me as he worked through them. One example of this in the third chapter of the book where he discusses the man who found the treasure buried in the field and the merchant who found the pearl of great value. That single chapter alone was worth the price of the book many times over for me as it actually helped me better understand the process involved in my own conversion!

And finally, of course, there were a few parables that had always been a little mysterious to me. This book helped shed some helpful light on those as well. The story of the persist widow and the unjust judge is a good example here, and he tied this parable to a neat story about George Mueller and the persistence of prayer in a way that was very encouraging.

All in all, I highly recommend this little gem of a book. I think there is a lot of value and worth tucked into this book, and the simplicity of the presentation in no way undermines the depth of the wisdom it elucidates. Without a doubt or a misgiving, I will be recommending it and sharing it with other believers in the faith.

Good for young and old
By Roberto H
This book had a very positive theological impact on my life. In each chapter, James Boice tackles a different parable, relying on the gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Boice groups 22 of Christ's parables into those relating to kingdom, salvation, wisdom & folly, the Christian life, and judgment. He then summarizes and provides useful background information and commentary on each one.

The actual teachings of Christ himself plus the helpfully illuminating commentary by Boice gave me an enhanced understanding of Christ's will and encouraged me to draw closer to Him in appreciation for the peace and salvation He offers.

Highly recommend this book.

Boice offers little new and allows presuppositions flavor interpretation too strongly, imho.
By DR-J-J
While Boice is a popular author and many will enjoy his writing style, he offers little new. But if what you are looking for is homiletic gems, Boice is an exceptional choice on the parables. Boice is fairly easy for people to understand and keeps a reformed perspective. I certainly understand the many 4 and 5 star reviews, but in the remainder of this review I will attempt to explain my lower ranking.

All pastors and theologians will have their own theological persuasions and those always color their interpretations. How could they not? Still, as many within Boice's own camp are now letting Scriptures speak more in their context, it leaves Boice's work feeling dated and not very helpful.

As an example, I will use one of the parables in the book. Please note that I am not trying to dismiss a theology or an interpretation, but rather to give reason for my lower ranking. The reader can determine for himself/herself.

The parable of the Sower is the first parable Boice explains. He does well seeing out the basic issues. I like that he brings out that the "kingdom of God" is about God's rule. He then presupposes that the parable is about getting into heaven. He focuses on the 4 soils as 4 would-be believers and says the first 3 soils are not believers and the fourth is a believer. But nowhere in the parable is this mentioned. .. Not in the original parable, nor in Jesus' own interp. And with that homiletic maneuver, he has relegated the parable as not very applicable to believers. Obviously, the point of the parable is number four response, that much everybody gets. That is the only soil with fruit. Boice sees this too. But it is important that the sower and his actions are brought out. The point isn't who is and isn't saved, the point is who responds to God's rule and what God does and the specific results to the kingdom. Boice steals the impact of this powerful parable, imo.

Granted, Boice does come back and summarize what God does (he is not missing the whole picture, he is quite capable), but he doesn't connect it to this parable. Dissappointing, if your goal is to better understand the parables.

Do the last four sentences of Chapter 1 seem a bit contradictory to anyone else? He rightly points to God's ability...He even says we can't come to God. Then, at the end he says we can. Oh well, perhaps I just need to give him homiletic license. ..His preface does admit he didn't have much time to write the book.

If you are new to the parables, you may like his approach. Boice will give you answers. Are they correct, though?

If you want to go a little deeper, then you need to get something else. David Wenham's Parables of Jesus certainly has some strong points and is easy to follow. Still, he barely supports some of his fanciful interpretations. Hard to get excited. Pentecost does another nice introduction.

More academic and hard to follow is the recent: Stories With Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus has come out... still has a Calvinistic flavor, though well researched, well presented, and complete. But this will not serve the same purpose as Boice. Some other good academic titles... Interpreting the Parables and Jesus the Sage: The Pilgrimage of Wisdom. All three of these (the last is not merely a book on the parables) are more academic and complete, so you might investigate them a bit before you buy.

For non-academic titles: One wonderful book on the Parables is by Kenneth Bailey and he has several books to choose from. One on Luke's Parables is outstanding: Poet and Peasant and Through Peasant Eyes: A Literary-Cultural Approach to the Parables in Luke (Combined edition) and is very readable. His new one is even more easily read and full of wonderful insights: Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes: Cultural Studies in the Gospels. You will enjoy and be informed of some of the deep meanings behind the Parables.

Terrible editing, but great story
By KJ
I had to pause and figure whether this should be a 3 or a 4 star review. I went with 4 stars purely for enjoyment of this story. I have read all four books so far, and find them immensely entertaining.

However. The editing is terrible. Really, just awful. There are SO many mistakes, typos, incorrect words, random useless commas, and so on. It's infuriating because it really detracts from a great book. All of the books had the same mistakes and I just want to SHAKE this author for not proofing this series better. Other than the editorial issues (which were truly overwhelming), I loved it.

The good: The main character is a calculated mix of traits: honorable yet savage, generous yet vengeful, respectful yet coarse. Most of the time you love him but sometimes you hate him. The battle scenes were well played out and the overall story arc is logical and enjoyable. It's action packed, and the shield wall battles were very easy to visualize. I really enjoyed the details about the era in general - their beliefs, their gods, how their halls are structured, the food they ate and the clothes they wore, etc. All of that was well done. It was easy to become completely immersed in the story and I read all four books in quick succession.

The bad: There were some strange inconsistencies throughout (especially this book #4), which I also chalk up to bad editing. The story is told in first person perspective. Yet there is a single random paragraph that observes from a third person perspective a scout, and his thoughts at the time of death. It was just weird. There is not a lot of sex in the books beyond the general pillaging and raping of village folk, but in this last book there were a few detailed sex scenes which just seemed out of place. I don't mind that kind of stuff, but it just didn't mesh with the rest of the series. The author's love of the word "careering" is really annoying. Yes, it's a real word - but I don't think it's actually meant to be used in all the situations where it appeared - I believe "careening" is the word that is more appropriate in some cases. At least switch it up! The misspellings were so frequent and repetitive (focussed, lead vs. led) that it seems less an issue of editing and more an issue of... the author just doesn't know better? I don't know but it was very distracting. There are a million more examples that I can't recall off the top of my head right now and they were the same mistakes in each of the four books in this series. Lastly, the ending was very abrupt. In the other three books, the endings were obviously setting you up for a different story line or direction, and the moment of culmination made total sense. In THIS book, it just... ended. In the middle of a conversation no less. There wasn't the same sense of an appropriate break in the story as with the other books. I hope the next book wraps up some loose threads as well, which I won't go into here due to spoilers.

All in all, someone is probably reading this review and wondering why I actually ended up giving four stars but really it's because I liked this series a lot, that's all. Just plain and simple good reading if you can get past all the editorial BS. If the author could get that part worked out in the next book, it will be top notch. One other suggestion if the author happens to read this: a glossary/pronunciation guide IN THE BEGINNING would be really helpful. Also a map.

    Review
''Their work has been regarded as some of the premiere titles that have led the way for this growing phenomenon of gritty tales.'' --Urban Book Source, praise for the authors

    About the Author
New York Times bestselling authors Ashley & JaQuavis hit the scene at the age of seventeen. Born and raised in the most notorious neighborhoods of Flint, Michigan, it was only natural for the pair to write about the street life they knew all too well. During their freshman year in college they received national publishing deals, and with the Cartel series they have solidified themselves as two of the best in their genre.

    I Expected Better...(Spoiler Alert)
    By NeeshaPoo
After Murderville 1 and 2, I was so excited to read this book because I knew it would be a great read. Turns out it was just decent. Usually I would rate a 5/5 but it does not deserve it.It's like their new books can't compare to the old ones. What I'm beginning to notice is that all their characters talk the same, look the same, and act the same. If someone would have told me Leah was Dahlia and Disaya was Liberty, I wouldn't even be surprised. It's the same characters but different story. Some of the scenes on Murderville 3 were repetitive and just so unrealistic. The part when Dahlia killed Zulu and automatically got the respect of the African Mafia. Really??? She just killed their leader and these so called ruthless men all bow down like they wasn't ready to kill her minutes before. That whole scene made me mad. Then Rocko and Libery relationship was not as genuine as the authors tried to make it be. As I kept reading, I couldn't find one good reason why they loved each other. It just seemed so random that they ended up being together. Rocko claimed to be the type of guy that was unaffected by women but on another page he's talking about craving Liberty. Well which is it?... And Liberty claims to love Rocko but clearly he is a rebound cause she just now started noticing him. Another part that seemed ridiculous was Liberty's and Abia's unusual friendship. How can Liberty call her a mother figure and be so cool with the fact that Abia sold her. If anything she should be raging mad at Abia for making her go through all that BS with Samad. Abia could care less about Liberty so that whole scene of them hugging and talking like old pals was fake. The authors even threw in a flashback to prove my point.I guess the redeeming quality of the book would be the fact that Dahlia died and it had a good ending. If the ending was crappy I would probably give it a 1/5.

    Glad it's over with

Let me say I love A&J's work. They are a brillant duo. But I do tire of the series, especially waiting on them year by year. This book was OK but it wasn't jaw dropping, which proves my point exactly. If you continue to draw these books out, the thrill is no longer there. But as for this one, I can say I'm glad the ending was different from their usual. Dahlia was a piece of work but her fate goes to show that greed can be your downfall. I don't see how Liberty lived the life she did and couldn't handle her cousin. And it's funny how all of a sudden Po finally realized what was really going on. I did like how the previous characters came together. I saw one reviewer said true fans didn't need a reminder of who was who-I disagree. I have read every book they have put out. A&J write a lot of books and in between they are putting out book installments. Sometimes so much time has passed that you need a reminder.

    Not a good Finale
    By El Fuerte
The series itself drifted off and was way to predictable.... I don't lke how they had Liberty switching sides so easliy. and I dont llike how Dahlia met her demise so suddenly after her build up from the last book. I do like how they brought the Cartel, Dopfiend and Supreme Clientele series together thought! but this book was a dud for a finale

    Hormones Gone Haywire?

There is a crisis in women’s health today. The average age for puberty has dropped abruptly to 10 years of age. Endometriosis, one of the top three causes of female infertility, affects more than 5.5 million women. 75% of all women suffer with some premenstrual syndrome symptoms. 80% of all women have uterine fibroids (which lead to 170,000-300,000 hysterectomies annually). And dysmenorrhea—menstrual pain that interferes with day-to-day activities—affects approximately 40-70% of women of reproductive age. If you’ve visited your doctor for any of these reasons, it’s likely you’ve been given birth control pills to “even things out” or hormone replacement therapy. But is this really a solution?

The Solution Isn’t More Birth Control Pills

It’s likely that hormonal treatments will only mask the symptoms, if not make things worse. So what is the solution? Is PMS to be normal and expected every month? Is infertility unable to be treated without invasive therapies? Are hot flashes simply a symptom of getting older? Luckily, the answer is no to all of these questions. There is a solution, and it doesn’t involve drugs or invasive therapies. The solution lies in hormonal balance.

A Total System for Female Health

The Female Body Blueprint by Josh and Jeanne Rubin takes the complex subject of hormonal balance and breaks it down into easy to digest information and action steps. By naturally decreasing the amount of estrogen in your body, increasing the amount of progesterone, and healing your metabolism, you’ll be well on your way to hormonal health at any age. Get back in balance by learning how to eat, sleep, exercise, and de-stress. They don’t teach this stuff in school…or likely in your doctor’s office. But these are the vital foundations that will make this women’s health crisis a thing of the past. Follow this blueprint and take back control of your health once and for all.

    About the Author

Josh grew up on the East Coast, in Boston, MA, and Jeanne was born and raised on the West Coast in San Diego, California. That’s right, California girl meets East Coast boy. They could not have come from two more different backgrounds, but as destiny would have it, they united as EastWest Healing and Performance in 2007.

Their journeys from where they came from to where they are today are just as different as they are. Josh grew up an athlete in a very health conscious home, and Jeanne, well, not so much. As the only girl out of five children, affordable food, and enough of it, was the primary goal. None of which supported the severe menstrual cycles, brain fog, extreme mood fluctuations, and low energy she experienced from puberty and into her late 20s.

Josh and Jeanne have spent over 20 years establishing themselves in the fitness and nutrition industry. As authors, mentors, consultants, speakers, and educators to individuals around the world, Josh and Jeanne Rubin pride themselves on their approach to working with the wholeness of each individual and have dedicated their practice to helping people help themselves.

    Common sense approach
    By Charlene Chan-Muehlbauer
My family used the Weston A. Price diet to heal from rheumatoid arthritis. The Rubin's Blueprint is quite similar. I am a woman in my early 50's with no real health complaints - and have never had any issues with hormones or irregular periods or menstrual cramps. I got this book because I am approaching the age of menopause - I do seem to have some uterine fibroids that do not cause bleeding or pain - and I was curious what the Rubins had to say about this.

Their suggestion to eat plenty of carbs, protein and fat throughout the day in small meals is an approach I've taken my whole life. Sometimes I'm embarrassed by how much I eat - but I've never been overweight and feel good so I don't worry about it. I like their discussion about the importance of adequate salt in the diet. Mainstream dietary advice has us fearing salt to our detriment I believe.

The one area in which they differ from the WAP diet is that they don't mention the importance of dietary enzymes and probiotics. WAP found that healthy tribes all ate some animal protein and fats raw - unheated. Either raw milk, fish, meat, organ meats, etc. Fermented foods were also considered to be important probably for regulating the gut microbiota.

Also, the Rubins recommend an avoidance of all grains. My sense is that can be helpful as a temporary measure, but people who avoid grains long term seem to run into problems with exacerbating food sensitivities.

Overall, the book is highly readable and has good advice.

The easier, softer way to female health...
    By Jag-Bug
So many women I know are approaching their health problems with the more well-known "diet" of food restriction, excessive exercising and hormone replacement therapy. They don't realize how unhelpful those choices may be, or how it's often it's not working for them. Although I am still working on healing my body, I have found many of the Rubin's suggestions, such as eating raw carrot salads, gelatin & good salt, along with the Epson salt baths, to be enormously helpful to my mood and sleep. I applaud Josh and Jeanne for continuing to offer us great information that challenges some more popular theories, and encouraging us to adapt it to our personal needs.

    Disappointing
    By Carol from Texas
There is a lot of info in this book but no links, notes, or studies to back up what is being said or presented as stats.

I knew something was off about this book from the get go when Estrogen was presented as the bad hormone with it's list of effects being only negative. Really? There is nothing good about estrogen that could have made the list?

Next is the Progesterone list where it's nothing but sunshine and roses. No negatives at all?

These two lists early on in the book set the stage for estrogen fear so read on to save yourself. I didn't appreciate the authors trying to scare me into reading further.

What they have to say may very well be beneficial to the woman's body but they lost me on the dishonest tactics and nothing to back up their claims.

The Ray Peat quotes were odd. Not the quotes themselves but what seemed to be the only source they used in trying to add credibility to what they were saying. Perhaps Ray Peat's book is what I should read. Maybe he's taken the time to note where his claims come from.

I won't tell you, the review reader, to avoid this book but encourage you to do your own research before jumping in and messing with your hormones.

Telling Stories: The Use of Personal Narratives in the Social Sciences and History, by Mary Jo Maynes, Jennifer L. Pierce, Barbara Laslett

In Telling Stories, Mary Jo Maynes, Jennifer L. Pierce, and Barbara Laslett argue that personal narratives―autobiographies, oral histories, life history interviews, and memoirs―are an important research tool for understanding the relationship between people and their societies. Gathering examples from throughout the world and from premodern as well as contemporary cultures, they draw from labor history and class analysis, feminist sociology, race relations, and anthropology to demonstrate the value of personal narratives for scholars and students alike.

Telling Stories explores why and how personal narratives should be used as evidence, and the methods and pitfalls of their use. The authors stress the importance of recognizing that stories that people tell about their lives are never simply individual. Rather, they are told in historically specific times and settings and call on rules, models, and social experiences that govern how story elements link together in the process of self-narration. Stories show how individuals' motivations, emotions, and imaginations have been shaped by their cumulative life experiences. In turn, Telling Stories demonstrates how the knowledge produced by personal narrative analysis is not simply contained in the stories told; the understanding that takes place between narrator and analyst and between analyst and audience enriches the results immeasurably.

    Review
"This decade has witnessed the publication of several anthologies that focus on how to design and conduct oral history projects; introduce and illustrate new applications of oral history to geographical, historical, and social research; and discuss the application of new technologies to oral history methodology. . . . In this new, important corollary to these works, the authors emphasize the research opportunities available through analysis of personal narratives: 'Read carefully, these sources provide unique insights into the connections between individual life trajectories and collective forces and institutions beyond the individual.' Telling Stories belongs in every oral history collection. Summing Up: Essential."―Choice, July 2009

"Each of these authors brings a wealth of insight and experience to this discussion of the distinctively illuminating arguments that can be drawn from personal narrative materials. Theoretically sophisticated and grounded in an intriguing array of empirical works, Telling Stories will be an indispensable resource for those interested in any variety of life-story research."―Marjorie DeVault, Syracuse University, author of Liberating Method: Feminism and Social Research

"Telling Stories is an invaluable guide to making sense of personal narratives across two key disciplines: social science and history. This clear, thoughtful, and comprehensive guide to key issues and their interpretation―questions on agency, subjectivity, intersubjectivity, the complexity of narrative genres―is essential reading as we work to comprehend this key source in the production of knowledge."―Faye Ginsburg, David B. Kriser Professor of Anthropology, Director, Graduate Program in Culture and Media, and Director, Center for Media, Culture and History, New York University

"Telling Stories provides an instructive and usable map of approaches to working with personal narratives. The authors' careful readings of a number of key texts are clear and graceful."―Michael Frisch, University at Buffalo, SUNY

"Telling Stories supports the value of the narrative turn and offers well-grounded advice to would-be narrative historians."―Arthur W. Frank, University of Calgary

    Outstanding!
    By Leslie J. Irvine
Telling Stories examines the versatile and growing area of narrative analysis in the social sciences and history. The term "narrative" has various meanings, but the authors use it here to refer to personal narrative, or "a retrospective first-person account of the evolution of an individual life over time and in social context" (4). Whereas numerous texts have summarized and discussed the linguistic and structural aspects of narratives, Telling Stories shows how narratives can be appreciated for what they reveal about the relationship between the individual and society. The authors are highly respected scholars of history (Maynes), sociology (Laslett), and American Studies (Pierce) who have published long lists of works based on narrative sources. All three have been involved in the development of narrative analysis in their fields. They draw on some of their own works, as well as numerous other examples, to offer a cross-disciplinary discussion of what narratives are and how they "work" as evidence.

Telling Stories would be of interest to anyone interested in studying the stories people tell. If I could give more than five stars, I would.

Interesting subject matter, terribly terribly jargony writing
    By JaShong King
This book is not, repeat NOT, for the general audience. It is written in incredibly dense and hard to parse jargonese which I assume come from the sociology community. Frequent allusions to "agency" and a myriad of other catchwords that could probably be avoided in the interests of communication with a broader audience.

That said, this book has some very intriguing ideas about what narratives mean in a broader social science concept. A good example would be the discussion on how narratives are selected, and the thinking behind narratives as "reflective" of broader historical movements, and whether those values are taken as true or not. I wish I could explain it better, but therein lies the problem of this book and the way it's written.

The book is a hunt for the most beautiful wildflowers amidst the highest weeds. It is incredibly tough, incredibly arduous to read. Not all insights are brilliant, but the few that are, stick with you.

George Gibson is determined to check off the last item on his bucket list: a trip across America. He hops in his RV to visit - and sketch - the buildings and places across America that he and his wife never got to see. When his daughter learns of a young boy forced to give up a beloved Saint Bernard named Lewis, she suggests George adopt the animal as a traveling companion. The dog even fits perfectly in the sidecar of George's Vespa motor scooter.

As George warms to his travel mate, he begins talking to Lewis, sharing stories from his life and his unrealized dreams. Along the way, Lewis seems to attract people and make instant friends with the quirky and charming, funny and odd people who cross their path.

Could it be that his new friends - and this strange dog - will help George to finally confront the secret he's been hiding? Can Lewis's devotion to the truth be enough to save George from himself?

    Swell story
    By Antigone Walsh
This is a story about a man with nothing to live for, a little boy who hopes to live and the dog that that helps them see the truth. George is a widower. Laden with guilt, he plans one last cross country RV trip. Alex is a sick child who has developed severe allergies to his beloved St. Bernard, Lewis. It will take a year for allergy shots to take effect so George, under pressure from his daughter, reluctantly agrees to a canine companion for his road trip. Lewis is the ultimate canine counselor. He is a great listener and loves unconditionally. Resistance is futile.

This is a nice little story sure to appeal to dog lovers. The author portrays Lewis beautifully. Lewis is man's best friend, healing the hearts of his human companions. true it is fairly predictable and most of the book involves George's musings. It is gentle and heartwarming and does justice to dogs, seniors and kids.

Sometimes, listening to a dog is exactly what you need
    By Dogs & Horses
Lewis won me over. I typically don't read faith based literature of any sort because I find most of it overbearing and the writing or plot is forgotten in the author's urge to send a message. Fortunately, Conversations with Saint Bernard doesn't fall into this trap. This is a very soft, gentle story about lost people finding themselves, finding each other, and a path through the darkness of guilt, grief, illness and emotional transition. Who else could guide them except a gentle giant of a Saint Bernard?

Lewis seems to have a gift of full understanding of and the ability to communicate back to the people who need his compassion, guidance and love the most. As a life long dog lover, owner and rescuer this concept doesn't surprise me in the least - nor is it remotely out of the ordinary to think of God or Forces of Good (or whatever you want to call it) working through the pure hearts of our dogs in our care. The author handles this nicely throughout the book and gives Lewis a full personality without making him less of a dog. During a trip across the nation, we watch the bond between George and Lewis evolve as well as George's own relationship with himself evolve and that was nice. There's a selection of questions at the end to open a discussion on the book's messages for a club reading if you're so inclined. I may recommend this one to my neighbor for ladies quilting group actually. I'm glad I read this book...I put it away and hugged all six of my sweet dogs and I swear they all said "We love you too."

    Exceeds in excellence
    By Trudie Barreras
One of the major perks of being an Amazon Vine reviewer for me has been the opportunity to become acquainted with Abingdon Press. I have found that virtually every book I have chosen from the “Christian Books and Bibles” section of “Vine for All” has been interesting, uplifting, and thoroughly enjoyable. “Conversations with Saint Bernard” by Jim Kraus, however, “exceeds in excellence”.

The basic plot is of course simple and straightforward. George Gibson, still grieving the death of his wife, plans a cross-country trip as a valedictory. Alex Burden, after a precarious childhood with repeated heart surgeries, seems “on the mend” until it turns out he’s allergic to his beloved dog Lewis. Through the intervention of Providence working through George’s daughter Tess and Alex’s mother Trudy, it eventuates that Lewis becomes George’s traveling companion, but much more as well, during the time it takes for Alex to take desensitizing shots. The dog is psychic, or perhaps an angel in disguise, and serves not only to bring George in contact with several people along the way that he “needs” to meet, but also insists that he confront and deal with the truth.

The story is lively, amusing while of significance relevant to the issues it resolves, and develops the “special” character of Lewis without overplaying the anthropomorphism. Other characters, as well as the under-girding theme of how prayer does (and doesn’t) work make this a story well worth reading and sharing with loved ones.

Max Wolfe is back-the two-fisted homicide detective with a small daughter and dog waiting for him at home and a crazed serial killer waiting for him somewhere out in the pitiless London streets.

On New Year's Day, a wealthy family is found slaughtered inside their exclusive gated community, their youngest child stolen away. The murder weapon-a gun used to stun cattle before they are butchered-leads Max to a dusty corner of Scotland Yard's Black Museum devoted to a mass murderer who, 30 years ago, was known as The Slaughter Man. But The Slaughter Man has done his time and is now old and dying. Is he really back in the killing game? And was the slaughter of a happy family a mindless killing spree, or a grotesque homage by a copycat killer, or a contract hit designed to frame a dying man? Max desperately needs to find the missing child and stop the killer before he destroys another innocent family-or finds his way to Detective Wolfe's own front door.

The Slaughter Man is another taut thriller from acclaimed international bestseller Tony Parsons.

    Review

“[Tony Parsons] has decided to try his hand at crime fiction, and made an impressive job of it. The dry Parsons wit is certainly there in Detective Constable Max Wolfe ... Told with conviction, and at an ever accelerating pace, it is the first of a trilogy over the next three years.” ―The Daily Mail (UK)

“Combines Parsons' trademark feel for character with a knack for visceral details...Truly emotive crime writing is a rarity and The Murder Man looks set to win Parsons many new fans in the genre.” ―GQ (UK)

“Spectacular-tense but human, fast but authentic-maybe this is what Tony Parsons should have been doing all along.” ―Lee Child

“Sometimes, rarely, you know from the first chapter or so of a novel that you're in the hands of a master story teller. In the case of Tony Parsons' brilliant new thriller, The Murder Man, we know this within the first few pages. A relentless plot, evocative prose and compelling (and wrenching) portraits of the characters, good and evil, conspire to make this a must-read. And I have two words for hero Max Wolfe: More. Soon.” ―Jeffery Deaver

    Absolutely too far fetched
    By William Brown
I have forgotten how often Max was brutally attacked and was clear headed and lucid shortly thereafter. Nobody gets hit over the head with a champagne bottle without serious injury requiring medical attention.
As well, I cannot envision unarmed police officers going into a house not knowing what is facing them .
This book has more items for discussion than I can count.
I won't buy this author again.

Plotting D, characterization B. Disappointing compared to the first Max Wolfe book
    By Maine Colonial
I was so impressed by Tony Parsons's first Max Wolfe novel last year (titled The Murder Man in the US and The Murder Bag in the UK) that I couldn't wait for the next one. I love Tony Parsons's writing style and his main character, but I had a lot of problems with the plot of The Slaughter Man.

When I began listening to the audiobook of The Slaughter Man, I smiled to hear, once again, Colin Mace's perfect voicing of the first-person narrative. The Detective Constable Max Wolfe character is such a good one. A copper who knows how bad the world can be but hasn't become completely cynical; a single father devoted to his little girl, Scout, and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Stan; a guy who loves boxing as the sweet science, not for its brutality. Refreshingly, Max Wolfe is an interesting guy without being an alcoholic or drug abuser.

As with The Murder Man, The Slaughter Man begins with a prologue that graphically describes a horrific crime. In the current book, the crime is the murder of the wealthy Wood family, including father, mother and two teenage children, and the abduction of their young son. The book's plot takes two paths: the solution of the murderers and the attempt to find the little boy, Bradley.

As a fan of police procedurals, this plot often made me crazy. I can't say too much without spoilers, but I can say that it depends way too much on the fact that several (yes, several!) of the characters don't tell what they know, and on the cops being just plain thick. There is some fundamental sloppiness in procedure, and on multiple occasions Max wades into danger without calling for backup, even though there is time. He escapes impossible situations and injuries that should have killed him or at least hospitalized him but, unbelievably, somehow he's on his feet and even boxing in nothing flat. Sheesh.

Again, I can't say much without spoilers, but almost nothing about the Bradley plot makes sense. On top of that, the direction that investigation takes Max is lurid and repulsive.

This was a real letdown after The Murder Man. I like the Max Wolfe character enough to give the next book a try, but I hope Parsons will do a much better job of plotting. I'm also hopeful he can go for a less sensationalistic murder plot, and one with less sexual violence.

In a comment below, I'm going to post some VERY spoiler-y notes about things that bothered me in the book. Don't read the comment if you don't want to read spoilers.

    Stupid.
    By Frank Blank
I agree pretty much with Maine Colonial's review, although am feeling less charitable. The investigation of the crime had two principal features: Max's stupid mistakes and Tony Parson's research. Neither were interesting, but I will say that Max paid for his mistakes. Over and over he gets the holy hell beat out of him, simply because he ignores normal, sensible police procedure.

This seems to be part of a larger pattern in Brit cop novels, and to a lesser degree ours. The books are more and more becoming torture porn directed at the cops. It's not that the cops get beat up; it's that they get the crap beat out of them again and again. It strikes me that something perverse formed in the relationship between British readers, writers and police, with the writers expressing total contempt for the cops presumably on behalf of the readers. And particularly odd about it is that it's totally ignored by the ad writers and promo persons. Of Slaughter Man it is said of Max Wolfe that he's a two fisted hero, but actually he's a reckless wimp; a punk. As are his fellow cops, who also take a beating.

So if anyone who happens to read this is familiar with the British zeitgeist and has any ideas about their near addiction to torture porn, please comment and lets talk about it.

I got this book for free from the library in return for an honest review.
