When Freedman first enunciated this position, he was met with skepticism, in part because it was hard to believe that a mathematical statistician of his stature would favor "low-tech" approaches. But the tide is turning. Many social scientists now agree that statistical technique cannot substitute for good research design and subject matter knowledge. About the Author
David A. Freedman (1938-2008) was Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a distinguished mathematical statistician whose theoretical research included the analysis of martingale inequalities, Markov processes, de Finetti's theorem, consistency of Bayes estimators, sampling, the bootstrap, and procedures for testing and evaluating models of methods for causal inference. Freedman published widely on the application - and misapplication - of statistics in works within a variety of social sciences, including epidemiology, demography, political science, public policy, and law. He emphasized exposing and checking the assumptions that underlie standard methods, as well as understanding how those methods behave when the assumptions are false - for example, how regression models behave when fitted to data from randomized experiments. He had a remarkable talent for integrating carefully honed statistical arguments with compelling empirical applications and illustrations. Freedman was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2003 he received the National Academy of Science's John J. Carty Award, for his 'profound contributions to the theory and practice of statistics'.

David Collier is Robson Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. His current work focuses on conceptualization and measurement and on causal inference in qualitative and multi-method research. He is co-author of Rethinking Social Inquiry: Diverse Tools, Shared Standards and co-editor of two recent volumes: The Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology and Concepts and Method in Social Science. A central concern of his research is with the contribution of detailed case knowledge to causal inference and concept formation.

Jasjeet S. Sekhon is Associate Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. His current research focuses on methods for causal inference in observational and experimental studies and evaluating social science, public health, and medical interventions. Professor Sekhon has done research on elections, voting behavior, and public opinion in the United States; multivariate matching methods for causal inference; machine learning algorithms for irregular optimization problems; robust estimators with bounded influence functions; health economic cost effectiveness analysis; and the philosophy and history of inference and statistics in the social sciences.

Philip B. Stark is Professor of Statistics at University of California, Berkeley. His research centers on inference problems, focusing on quantifying the uncertainty in inferences that rely on numerical models of complex physical systems. Professor Stark has done research on the Big Bang, causal inference, the US census, chemical spectroscopy, earthquake prediction, election auditing, food web models, the geomagnetic field, geriatric hearing loss, information retrieval, Internet content filters, nonparametrics, the seismic structure of the Earth and Sun, and spectrum estimation. He has served as an expert witness on statistics for government and industry in state and federal courts.

A good collection of articles by the author.

This is not a textbook. Rather it is a collection of articles written by the author and his collaborators. Some articles are more interesting than others. Some are more difficult to read as they required certain background for the issues that the author was trying to address. Overall, it is a good book and a great reminder that there are lots of assumptions made in statistics. You need to revisit all these assumptions on every problem you encounter. Don't just believe what newspaper headlines say.

This is how to do statistical analysis

I am not familiar with all the authors, but this book has Freedman's finger prints all over it.

In the book, many of our known social problems are reviewed and discussed with a deeper statistical view than earlier writers on the topics. For example, the evidence that the outbreak of the Guillaume Barre syndrome was strongly related to vaccines is shown to be weaker than many have believed.

For many scientists, this book will be very interesting.

As described in a clearly written, succinct introduction, the subjects are the "Little People," spirits with restricted powers who "are 'little' in the sense of limitation rather than size." They include fairies, angels, dwarfs, encantados (from Afro-Brazilian cults), djinns (from Islamic cultures), trolls, tricksters, and many more otherworldly creatures who "tend to interfere with the lives of humans." Each entry provides a brief description of the being and identifies its place of origin as well as its most common features. Footnotes refer to a numbered bibliography that includes over 100 titles, some well known and some obscure and long out of print. Black-and-white illustrations, taken from a variety of sources, are sprinkled throughout. A ubiquitous topic of speculation and study, spirits are found in countless traditional tales. British scholar Rose uses the following criteria for inclusion here: a spirit must exert active, willful, and supernatural influence on humans or domestic creatures; it cannot be divine (i.e., a saint or of other heavenly origin); and it is neither a hero nor a ghost involved in the actual human condition. Universal in scope and designed for quick reference, the more than 2500 entries?collected from learned journals, monographs, and rare and out-of-print sources?identify spirits spanning all times and places. The entry head represents a spirit's most common name; spirit names from other cultures and languages, including ancient ones, are transcribed into a modern English equivalent. Rose provides physical description and identifies the religions, countries, and regions with which a spirit is associated. Comparable works include Katherine Briggs's An Encyclopedia of Fairies: Hobgoblins, Brownies, Bogies and Other Supernatural Creatures (1976), which is a notable study but confined to the traditions of Great Britain, and Mythical and Fabulous Creatures: A Sourcebook and Resource Guide (Greenwood, 1987), an important recent work introducing essays on creatures largely known to Western civilization only. The author of this title has compiled more than 2,000 entries of "Little People," or spirits. Inclusion in this volume is based on the spirit's active, willful, and supernatural influence on humans or their domestic creatures. Rose covers a wide variety of these "Little People," taking a multicultural approach that includes aboriginal, Native American, and African as well as European myths. Typical entries are Rumpelstiltskin, Hesperides, Goblin, Trickster, Tooth Fairy, and Old Man of the Sea. Arranged alphabetically, entries generally range from one sentence to approximately 500 words in length. The longest entry, Fairies, extends for several pages and discusses fairies in different countries.

Information includes the spirit's popular name, physical description, character, powers, and activities. Most of the entries direct the reader to a bibliography of 137 titles, referenced by number. Many of the titles in the bibliography are familiar, such as Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable and volumes from the Enchanted World series published by Time-Life. Readers are also directed to the appendixes, where the spirits are classified by type (for example, "Devils," "Spirits Associated with Water") and by place of origin. The appendixes include additional names not mentioned in the text entries and would be strengthened if names that do not have entries were differentiated from those that do. The reader who wants to research folklore of the U.S. must look up each of more than 100 names to see which ones appear in the main text. A way to distinguish among the legends of different U.S. cultures would also have been useful.

More than 100 black-and-white illustrations enhance this work. Cross-references aid the researcher in dealing with name variants and also in tracing the similarities and differences between the legends of different cultures.

A Plethora of Sensational Facts!

A MARVELOUS work! This book not only gives a definition, and most times a physical description of nearly every supernatural creature you could shake a stick at! Don't be fooled by the title, not only does the book give a definition of every single type of little people you could think of...hold on, how about "menehune"?...Yep! Got those little Hawaiian elves too! But it also gives descriptions for everything from succubus to angels! What it mainly doesn't have are the large mythical animals ie. Dragons, Griffins, Hippogriffs, Lindorms, and Wyverns. Furthermore, it also does great on specific creatures, you know, finding them by name. Lastly, there is a complete, and I mean COMPLETE appendix at the end of the book cross-referencing EVERYTHING in the book at least twice! On a final note, if you're reading the "Harry Potter" Books, you can find anything that Professor Lupin has taught about.

I just recieved this book for Christmas and have found it to be the most complete and extensive book I've seen on folklore characters and various other entities from history. I highly recommend it to those who want to learn more about the legends and mysteries of 'The Little People'.

You don't have to be clinically depressed to need and read this helpful and enjoyable book. Ms. O'Rourke's writing style is easy to read, wonderfully relatable, and most of all it's helpful. I've recommended it to two friends already, who have suffered from depression for most of their adult lives. They both raved about the style and substance of A Rebel's Take On Depression BREAKDOWN. I highly recommend this book for everyone, because we've all had a case of the blues once in a while. Eleanor O'Rourke lets us know that we're not alone, and offers her story as proof that it can and will get better. Two thumbs up!

Her poignant and thought-provoking memoir opens up a new way of looking at ourselves during difficult times. Eleanor's journey takes the reader from breakup to breakdown and finally to love and self discovery. Whether or not you've ever experienced depression, this book is a must read!

Authors Brenda Trim and Tami Julka are amazing writers in a number of ways, but it really shows in a series in the fact that you can read this book without reading the others and be fine. You will understand everything going on, but if you read them in order then you will have more of a dislike of the villains by the time you get to this book. This book is filled with magic and adventure, a good deal of fighting and sabotage. This is an excellent book and a great read. ~Reader's Favorite

This was an absolutely amazing read! These girls managed to rock it again. The synopsis tells you what the book is about, so I will not. I have loved Gerrick from the beginning of this series. Shae is a perfect balance for him. All of our favorite characters play a role, along with the new who I'm sure we will love. This is release day (and no, I was not gifted a copy of this) and I finished it not because it was a quick read. I could not put it down! Action, adventure and a fast pace. Friendship, romance, love and sex. Shifters, vampires, dragons, witches and warriors. HEA for our main couple. Yes, lead in for the next book, this is a series. You will not be disappointed in this series. Two great authors created another world that you could lose yourself in.

Great for personal use and counseling

This book gives you a step by step approach to finding the roots of sexuality. There are many great tips and techniques for counseling others as well. A great ministry tool. I recommend that all church leaders, lay ministers, parents, and teachers read this book. It is one of the best resources I have ever encountered to help those who are dealing with sexual issues of any kind.

READ this book!!!

As a parent of a twenty year old young woman who recently confessed about her struggle with same sex attraction this book is a must read. It broke our hearts to hear our daughter tell us about her struggle. We were confused, shocked and scared. I got this book in the mail and read it in one evening. It helped me to understand the probable causes of SSA and that there is absolute hope for those who want to break free of that lifestyle. As a Christian I know this is not in God's plan and design for us. To see your child struggle with this is gut wrenching but do not give up or in because there is hope. If you need facts , hope and encouragement read this book. It is a wonderful resource.

People find a way to rationalize away the things that they don't like, and it's not just homosexuals

I purchased this book in order to learn more about homosexuality since it's such a hot topic in our culture today. I truly want to understand what these folks are facing. Jeanette brings out many of the struggles lesbians face and why. She also writes a prescription for overcoming many of the lies fed to us by the enemy. I'm not a lesbian, but I've found myself in some of the stories she tells. She teaches practical ways of avoiding and overcoming temptation and being transformed into the person God truly created us to be. I believe that homosexuality is a personality disorder that begins to form so early in life that people truly feel they are born this way. It is something to heal from, and Jeanette tells how to find that wholeness. Sadly, many people continue to insist that homosexuality is not a sin, but the Bible clearly teaches that it is. People find a way to rationalize away the things that they don't like, and it's not just homosexuals. God has a lot to say about sex outside of marriage, divorce, lying, etc. I think there is so much attention on this particular sin, because the gay community has brought it to the forefront.

A fundraising book for the small nonprofit, or one that is not well organized!

This is a great book for the small nonprofit that does not know much about fundraising. If it were for a more established nonprofit, then it would not have referred to major gifts as those starting at $500. I'm used to major gifts starting at $10,000 and going up well into the 6 figures.

This book explains how to do the following:

1. Work with individual donors
2. Plan special events
3. Solicit grants from foundations and corporations
4. Get media coverage (publicity)
5. Use the Internet to help in the fundraising process
6. Create print marketing materials like brochures, newsletters, and annual reports

All the above are important parts of a fundraising plan. One has to set goals, strategize how to attain the goals. Then attract individual donors and develop a rapport with those donors so they give more and more each year. Eventually those donors will become major donors, but that topic is best left for another book.

The book includes a good list of Web sites for prospect research. But the appendix materials didn't seem to be up to par.

All in all, this book provides grassroots strategies for struggling nonprofits. It is no-nonsense and well organized. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the basics about nonprofit fundraising. Topics beyond the scope of this book are planned giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, and endowments. But if you read this book and understand it, then you will be ready to learn about the other topics just mentioned. 5 stars!

There are a tremendous number of non-profits around. There are also a tremendous number of funding organizations. Your job as the fundraising manager (whatever your exact job title may be) is to put your particular non-profit together with one or more funding organizations to raise the money you need.

There is a basic set of fundraising skills and technologies that you can use to fund nearly any non-profit. Gone are the days (in most places) where you can put together some simply fund raising activity and gain enough money to get you through the year.

Here in one simple book is an excellent summary of all of the most modern techniques. It includes:

Developing a Plan that will include your goal, the assets you have to do fundraising, and a strategy to use these assets in the most profitable manner.

Attracting Individual Supporters, which means making your organization look wupport-worthy, understanding your supporters and attracting new ones.

Your best supporters are those that have given you money before. Here are the techniques to keep them giving.

These techniques and many more are discused here by an expert in the field. It should be required reading for anyone responsible for fund-raising in a worthy organization.

Good Book for Start-Up Non-Profits

I found this book VERY helpful. In fact, I was so fascinated with it, I couldn't put it down. It was like a good novel. I immediately changed some of my thank you letters and re-did my Corporate request for funding letter. I will continue to use it's suggestions. The book is well written and not full of 'filler info', but very solid recommendations that one can put to use right away.

The book he wrote with his wife Robin Monroe Kocher, "Read Any Trailing or Tracking Dog by Understanding Negative Indications", has changed the way dogs are read across the USA, Europe and beyond.

Robin Monroe Kocher is a detective for the Sheriff's Office and the founder of the National Bloodhound Training Institute. Robin instructs at numerous seminars in the USA and has shared her knowledge in Europe.
