A Collection of Botvinnik's Games

This is my second review of a group of move-by-move books from the Everyman Chess Move by Move series. My review of Capablanca Move by Move appears elsewhere. I didn't like this book as much as the Capablanca book, perhaps because the games are more complex, and for a supposed move-by-move book the annotations are rather sparse. At one point, I counted 8 moves go by without a note. (Moves, not ply, moves!) And then when we finally did get a note, it told us that Botvinnik was preparing to push a passed pawn, which was obvious. In addition, the notes tend too often towards the "poetic" side rather than being informative.

It's a satisfactory collection of Botvinnik's games, but move-by-move it definitely is not.

Good to have if you have an interest in chess. A must for the Botvinnik fan.

I got the Kindle version. For this series, that format is very useful.

As Kindle users know, the books should be read sequentially. One page followed by the next page. Unlike some of the tournament or game collection books I have owned, this book is most profitably read with a purely sequential manner.

For the book itself, the content is superb. I believe Cyrus Lakadawala is one of the best authors out there. This effort is both substantive and enjoyable. Having gone through some of the tournament games, I believe I have knocked off a bit of rust. The path to improvement for many players is the love of study. The content will reward the study with some improvement of play. But in this case the study is quite enjoyable. More so if the player enjoys looking at difficult positions-something Botvinnik also enjoyed.

I highly recommend this book for all players at all strengths.

Very informative

Excellent book. The book investigates 60 games. The games are broken down into the following informative areas: Attack; Defense; Dynamic Elements; Exploiting Imbalances; Accumulating advantages and Endgames. My only gripe, which has been mentioned by most reviewers is that Lakdawala is like the high school nerd who thinks he funny. It's very distracting. For example: " Blacks confused defenders stumble about, disoriented. His pieces receive a memorandum from the bank, warning of a lack of funds in his account and imminent foreclosure to all properties. They find themselves surrounded by screaming creditors and conniving litigants. (pg. 158). The comments add very little to the informative analysis.

About the Author
Mayne Reid was an Irish American novelist and the author of adventure tales in a similar vein to Robert Louis Stevenson. Deep layers of emotion.....

For only being 302 pages, this one will haunt you. I love this author and appreciate her unbelievable talent and creativity. One Fine Day is one that I won't forget, and probably need to read again. It is layered with complexity of emotions, motivations, and relationships. It isn't my favorite of this author's work because, (I have to be honest), it's very dark.

Austin Bennett and his sister Gabrielle were raised by an abusive father. Both have serious intimacy and attachment issues. Weir delves into the middle of each of their existences in this multi-layered novel.

Austin's story focuses on his tumultuous marriage and most recently his separation from his estranged wife Molly. Austin has a debilitating stroke at the start of the book which compels Molly to come back into his life as a temporary caregiver. I didn't sense much love lost on Molly's part, but Austin's love for Molly is much more apparent. Austin's lack of ability to communicate, show, and trust love is apparent in their interactions. Molly also has her own emotional baggage that she carried into the marriage, and the wounds Austin has left on her in the aftermath of their hurtful marriage are noticeable. Weir almost waits to long to begin the "healing" process for this couple. Their love story comes late, but is very touching and emotional.

Gabrielle is not so lucky. Her life as a stripper has "stripped" her of so much. The wounds this woman carries were tough to swallow. This book is "REAL" in the sense that not all stories have happy endings. I found myself wanting one for Gabrielle, but painful pasts take time to heal...and some never do.

This is NOT a fun, whimsical, romantic fairy tale. It's title hints at something like that, but do not be fooled. These are some wounded people who hurt themselves, and others, out of pure instincts to survive. It's a tough read emotionally and one that "takes a lot out of the reader". I recommend it, don't get me wrong, but be aware of what's in store for you.

Molly and Austin find love, in this beautiful story. Or maybe, they already had it, and didn't know it. Maybe, it was a one-sided love. The layer after layer of storyline, adds to the depth of the book. This is a really perfect read!

Undisciplined Author

I'm only halfway through but I think this is a book desperately in need of an editor--it was originally published by subscription. The original title in my facsimile copy is "The History of the Big Bonanza" so history was what I was expecting. Instead it seems to be a collection of newspaper/magazine columns. Lots of colorful stories but short on stuff I find interesting. For example the original discoverers are named & the reader is told they sold their rights but to whom? The order of the chapters seems to follow no reasonable chronology or even theme: Indian troubles is followed by the "state of the society" followed by early mining techniques then, if memory serves, off with a travelogue description of the Sierras. I don't know if I'll actually finish it but I'll probably stick it out. One does get a feel for the colorful early miners but I was also interested in the life of the area & the business history of NV silver mining. Mark Twain he's not.

As a marketing director, I am often overwhelmed by the amount of data and how best to use it. This book is a very practical guide on how to use data and insights in an ever changing environment. It has also given me lots of practical examples. I have loved reading this book, not only have I learned a lot but it was also fun to read. Well worth a read for every marketer!
