Good Introduction to Catholicism

The first reviewer has missed the point of this book.

This book provides a good introduction for the general public and new Catholics as an ecumenically minded survey of what Catholics believe. This book is NOT a statement of the official teaching of the Catholic Church, nor is it a statement from supporters of the official positions of the Catholic Church. The beliefs of Catholics are highly varied and the plain truth is that many and even most Catholic practitioners disagree with at least some of the official teachings of the Catholic Church. This is good, and it shows how a church can be divided in belief and yet still find unity in what they do have in common, instead of dividing up into little pieces as the protestants have done. The author wants to present what the Catholic world community believes by representing all its diversity.

I am pretty well educated in Catholic belief, but since I did not grow up Catholic, I wanted to fill in any gaps in my knowledge on these matters. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a grasp of what being Catholic really means, what actual Catholics actually believe and practice in addition to the official and traditional Catholic teachings, and not the stereotypes you hear in the media or from the pulpit in protestant churches.

It DOES have the imprimatur...

I think this book is a very good guide for RCIA. Other reviewers seem to be disappointed that it is not "Orthodox enough". Note, however, that it does have the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur, indicating that it is free from doctrinal or moral error. This doesn't mean that everyone will agree with the opinions expressed, or language used ("negative vibe").

I'd suggest that it is a bit more like how we think of Pope Benedict than how we thought of Cardinal Ratzinger-- some are unhappy that the Pope isn't "as tough as he was", and others feel that the Pope strikes a good balance between teaching moral discipline, and guiding the flock with a loving hand. I think this book is more like the latter. For example, writing about whether homosexual unions should be permitted, it says "Some say yes, but the official position of the Catholic Church is still no." (pg 142).

That is an accurate statement of Catholic belief. However, this language will upset some as too ambiguous ("Some say yes"-- who? Is it talking about Catholic laity-- aren't they listening to the magisterium? Are Catholic priests preaching that-- time to excommunicate!) and not forbidding enough.

Hopefully this review will suggest to you whether this book is right for you and your parish.

Jackendoff's Valuable Contribution

This book is great for introducing non-specialists to important linguistic ideas which can crucially impact every other field (since language is involved in the way humans think about the world.) Jackendoff is a specialist who knows how to talk to non-specialists. The issues are so central to human nature and thought, however, that there can't help but be controversy about the best approach to resolving them. Probably everyone has their own opinion. I think he short-changes objective values, discourse level analysis, and the extent to which language and syntax make the mind human. But his contributions have made it more possible to address the problems clearly. He is a wonderful scholar and writer.

What Language Can Tell You About the Way Your Brain Works

This is the best popular book on language and thought I have ever read, and I have collected a number of them. Jackendoff, who is both a leading linguistics scholar and a composer, tells his readers about the origins, functions, and limitations of language, and what it can tell us about the ways the brain works. Jackendoff assumes that language is not written on a blank slate, but is learned by brains prepared for it.

It is all about perspectives.

An awesome book! Not that it is particular fancy pancy, long or particular difficult to read and understand. No, it just quietly says a lot about thought and meaning. An accomplishment, as thought and meaning are not easy subjects.

Many hard battles are avoided in the book by just taking a sensible middle road.
Concerning how we get from neural firing and information processing to experiences (Sitting outside in the sun, hearing kids playing, being there), what David Chalmers calls the hard problem, Jakendoff simply says that he doesn't think the question is tractable at this point in the sciences of the mind and brain.
So, he just thinks we should set it aside for now.
Not saying that we will have solved it in 15 years time, or that we will never solve it.
Meanwhile, there is plenty of other stuff to do, such as being more precise about the connections between brain neurons and experience.
What particular patterns of neural firing and information manipulation are correlated with which particular aspects of experience?

Free will is one of these confusing things that are built into consciousness.
Taken from our ordinary, daily life perspective, Jackendoff assures us that we do have free will. But, if we take a more neuro-scientific perspective, the brain must be doing something to give us the feeling of free will.
Not the kind of bloodthirsty arguments we might see in other books. Instead Jackendoffs arguments ring true.

So, what are people?
Going back to at least Descrates the thinking has been that: Humans have souls, are conscious, are rational, have language and have moral responsibility.
Where the modern world seems to disagree. Science isn't to sure about the soul (Many scientists will tell us that there is no such thing, and only a few will leave room for something unknown, such as Chalmers ''Hard Problem of Consciousness'').
Jackendoff summarizes by saying that in the end we get this message from the modern scientific world: ''There is nothing special about you. You are just a chance product of mindless evolutionary processes operating in a insignificant corner of the universe. Your life has no meaning. In fact, there is not even a you, there is just a clump of neurons interacting''.
Given these kind of arguments, Jackendoffs doesn't think it is a great mystery that there is public resistance to teaching evolution in schools.
Between such a picture and one in which you are meaningful and even sacred, where it matters what you do, and where there is a God that cares about you, which would you choose? He writes.
''If science tells me I don't exist, and that there is no right and wrong, then to hell with science''.
Jackendoff says he misses a way to resolve the crisis, where our lives becomes meaningful and sacred by the way we live these lives. But by that sentence alone he has almost solved it for us.

In the end it is all about perspectives.
Finding the right thoughts and ideas has do with finding the right perspective.
According to Jackendoff there is no such thing as an overarching, perspective free truth about the world. For each problem it is important that we find the right perspective.
If we take the wrong perspective, we end up saying weird things like that there is no Me, there are no sunsets etc.
Questions about the world tend not to converge on one set of answers...
Following his arguments, you see that this is not ''giving up'', but actually a way to sharpen our tools, so that we can do better.

Coming upon this book in rather a skeptical state of mind, I must say I found it intriguing, enlightening, brilliant, witty, and exasperating as it pursued its thesis with a species of grammatical acrobatics that I can only call arresting. This is a book about the ideologies of modern architecture, their philosophical origins, their manifestations, and the ways in which they are flawed. It is a book about architects who had and have conceptions about the ideal city, and it tries to reorient those conceptions from the utopia of a single vision to a more multivalent view of city form.

Difficult, opaque, frustrating, but important

I am a second-generation Rowe disciple, I guess. I studied with a Rowe acolyte in graduate school and worked with co-author Fred Koetter in an urban design studio. Without the efforts these teachers have made to bring Rowe's ideas to urban design students, they may well have been neglected, because Collage City is a mess. It is badly marred by dense thickets of poorly-edited, idiosyncratic prose. It was one of the more frustrating books I had to read in school, but I'm glad it was required, because the close readings uncovered real gems of theory. Rowe reintroduced the complexities and possibilities of art into urban design right at the peak of Modernism's influence. Architecture was still in the thrall of La Ville Radieuse and socialist-utopian projects that aimed to simplify and disinfect cities. Jane Jacobs saw the social perils of these projects, Colin Rowe saw the architectural perils. His critique of the Modern project was among the most powerful, and among the least cogent. Still, though it requires some serious digging in prose-mud, the gems are there and worth the search. I recommend this book for graduate-level urban theorists or serious urban design students.

But there are more accessible urban design primers: Aldo Rossi, et al, The Architecture of the City, for example, covers much of the same ground Rowe so spottily tilled [except where Eisenman is involved in the book: he is a worse prose-stylist than Rowe]. For non-specialists I also recommend Witold Rybczynski's City Life as a thoughtful and LUCID introduction to American urbanism, along with a critique of the last few decades of urban "development".

Bob Burg does it again!

This book is yet another excellent book written by Bob Burg. Unlike his books (The Go-Giver and It's Not About You), which are novels that teach people how to succeed by example following the student through the learning and discovery process, this book is written in the style of a training manual; with theory dialog followed by practical skill developing exercises. By reading and applying what Bob presents in this book, people can build off the charts incredible results. The most important thing anyone can do to achieve such results is catch the vision and decide those results are yours then never turn back on that decision.

real. qualified. simple.

There are so many classes, seminars, and books on the subject of sales that it is dizzying. And, Ive tried/read many of them. Bob Burg's book is staying on my limited shelf because it is Real, he is Qualified, and the information is simple and easy to reference. He cuts out the jargon and keeps to the straight forward information.

Bob Burg has truly helped out network marketers with this book. I only wish someone had handed me this book when I enrolled in my company. It will decrease the learning curve if you will just follow his principals, plug into the system that your mentors tell you to use, and duplicate. I am now going to explode my business, and go to the top!!

large heavy volume / not practical

Looks good on the coffee table; but not much use for anyone wanting to learn to draw. 90% of the illustrations are of isolated body parts- an arm, a foot. No dynamic poses at all.The animal anatomy while good is also static. Only book I'm returning so far.
...By contrast "Anatomy and Drawing" by Victor Perard covers, children, faces, stick figures, proportion, bones, muscels-and doesn't weigh 15 pounds!
...Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Figure Drawing" shows what can be done with foreshortening.
...Giovanni Civardi's books are worth checking out, they have received lots of rave reviews.
...Also superior is Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist's Guide to Form, Function, and Movement [Hardcover]

Pan-specie study of the mechanics of movement and anatomy

I purchased this book for my own use as an artist and massage therapist two years ago. I have used it so often that I was able to sell over half of my old reference books. The clarity and quality of the work in this book is unsurpassed by anything else I have seen. It IS an advanced work for artists, but you will be hard pressed to find a better book on the actual mechanics of movement and conformational relationship. As artists, this is an area that most of us need to tackle eventually. I have given it (with great results) as a gift to a 14 year-old artist nephew, an adult advanced artist and a horse/dog trainer. I am now buying six more copies to give to the staff of a local college where I work. We hope to make this one of our reference works in anatomy and functional observations. The comparative anatomy portions includes: human, equine, canine, feline, lion, sheep, cattle, hog, camel, simian, crocodile, seal, etc. There are detailed sections for each of the first eight/nine animals and I would have been well satisfied with the human portion alone. In forty years, I have NEVER found a better buy for my money. sf
